However, speaking of things that stats don't show, his maturity/temper whatever you want to call it is a huge issue. I'm all for intensity, I'm all for using your emotions to pitch/hit/field better. However, that man loses his cool. And when he loses his cool, his pitching suffers.
I think he was frustrated with himself as well. he had that game in PITT and now yesterday....where it was his game to win. He makes too many bad 0-2 pitches and it hurts him. He seems to concentrate better when they do not score him a lot of runs though. I like him but also wary of when he will lose his cool and his command.

Maybe Mat said something to Jay on the field and when the inning was over, came in to defend himself when actually, misheard what he said.

The pointing to Brandon tells me he was like "Ask brandon, he heard what I said" kind of argument.

At the end, Jay says "you got to be %#$* kidding me."

Who knows. I doubt the two like each other much more than teammates have to. You'll have that, especially with a creature like Mat Latos who's known for being a butthole.

    Let's see...Bruce...or Latos.

My guess is Latos was the jerk.

I guess I could wait for all the data to pour in, but what's the fun in that?

Two type A athletes get in a discussion, fans play the soap opera card, seem to forget the Reds are winning, long for days of Josias Manzanillo and Dernell Stenson, guys who never argued in view of the fans.

Two young men who excel in a competitive environment, who spend more time with each other than they do with their families, who are with each other on the road for long stretches at a time happen to get in a thirty second disagreement.

Nothing to see here, people. There's plenty of real news to read in the world.

I'm actually more concerned about his velocity.

    2009 Padres 94.1
    2010 Padres 94.0
    2011 Padres 93.0
    2012 Reds 92.7
    2013 Reds 91.5

One of the reasons I see no rush to extend these pitchers like so many feel we are. We are pretty much guaranteed to get their best years already. Let someone else pay for the downside. Must continue to develop young pitchers is the best way to sustain success. Giants are so happy Lincecum didn't take them up on extension talks.

Ok. I have to step in here. I have grown to know Mat a little bit, and he is not a jerk at all. It's actually quite the opposite. He's competitive, like most pro athletes and the media labeled him a long time ago. That's about it.
Benzinger backing and calling! And the 1990 world championship series belongs to the Cincinnati Reds!

Seems to me that they were reenacting the scene on the bus from Bull Durham when Crash Davis gets in a fight with Nuke LaLoosh.

Or fighting over Annie Savoy, played by Dallas Latos.

"Nuke" Latos was just trying to "announce my presence with authority."
"I can make all the stadiums rock."
