    NL Central

    How good is the NL Central right now? I didn't think, going into this season, we would have 3 teams with 28 wins or more at this point. Many here, including myself, though since the Astros were gone, it would cut down on the number of wins. The top teams aren't just doing it with easy schedules either. The Cardinals had one of the toughest schedules in April and the Cardinals, Reds, and Pirates have played each other quite a bit in the early going. The way other teams are performing in the NL, I wouldn't be shocked if two NL Central teams fought it out in the Wild Card game.

    The Reds and the Cardinals are very good.

    The Pirates are doing what they do every year.

    The Brewers have no pitching.

    The Cubs suck.

    How very mid-2000s Reds of them.

    Re: NL Central

    At the beginning of the season, I didn't have either wild card coming out of the NL Central. I figured one would come out of the East (Atlanta or Washington) and one would come out of the West (L.A., Arizona or S.F.).

    Events during the first quarter of the season have led me to re-think my position. I now believe that either the Cardinals or the Reds will take one of the spots, while Arizona and Washington / Atlanta takes the other.

    I have my doubts whether Colorado and Pittsburgh can sustain their current level of success, and have lost faith in the Dodgers to turn their season around.

    Still a lot of season left to be played, and anything is possible, including significant injuries, but at this point, that's my take.

    Should be a great summer.

    How very Rob Neyer of you
    ...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

    So you don't think the Cardinals or Reds would be good enough to compete in the AL East? The Cardinals currently have played the 7th hardest schedule in baseball and ESPN puts them #1 in RPI and the Reds #11 in RPI. I don't know why you think they couldn't compete in the AL East. It's kind of a moot point though considering that they don't play in the AL East.

    The Reds would be leading 4 out of 6 MLB divisions as of today, the Rangers are taking advantage of the Angels and Astros & that's why they are the best team in the AL right now - that is the only reason the Reds don't have the 2nd best record in baseball the way I see it.

    The Rangers are good but not that good IMO.

    Re: NL Central

    Next 4 weeks are pretty easy for the Cardinals, except for that last 10 days.

    @Houston 2 games
    @Oakland 3 games
    @Angels 3 games
    vs. Miami 3 games
    vs. Houston 2 games
    @ Cubs 4 games
    vs. Padres 3 games
    vs. Phillies 3 games

    Tough stretch right here......
    @ Braves 3 games
    @ Pirates 5 games (makeup doubleheader)
    @ Reds 3 games

    Reds next 5 weeks:
    @ Oakland 2 games
    @ Texas 3 games
    vs. Giants 4 games
    vs. Mariners 3 games
    @ Brewers 3 games
    @ Braves 4 games
    vs. Pirates 3 games

    Then the west coast swing over 10 straight days......
    @ Giants 3 games
    @ Dodgers 4 games
    @ Padres 3 games

    Only to come home exhausted and face.............THE CARDINALS!
    vs. St. Louis 3 games

    That's actually the next 6 weeks for the Reds, by the way.

    Interesting note in regard to the trading deadline is that the Reds are on that 10-day West Coast swing up until July 31st. A lot will be known about this team at that point in terms of needs.

    Pirates schedule up until the deadline:
    @ Mariners 2 games
    vs. Brewers 3 games
    vs. Phillies 3 games
    @ Cubs 3 games
    vs. Oakland 3 games
    vs. Mets 3 games
    @ Reds 3 games
    @ Nats 4 games
    @ Miami 3 games

    Then they head into the trading deadline playing that 5 game series vs. the Cardinals that includes a make up game doubleheader.

    Should be interesting the next 5-6 weeks.
