Segura is about as realistic as Harper or Trout.

I would target Michael Young if he keeps up his solid production and the Phillies drop back and as a veteran outfielder with pop for the bench- Raul Ibanez. I doubt either would cost much and would give playoff experience for the bench.

Not sure if the Angels qualify as a contender, but Scott Downs is a free agent after the year and he's still effective.

If someone else is lost, that may change the answer, but I think the Reds are OK at the other spots. If Ludwick can't come back, I might go for a RH OF Bat, but I wouldn't create a hole elsewhere or empty too much of the depth chart to get one. With those conditions, it might be hard to upgrade from Heisey.
I like you thinking. Not sure a lefty specialist over a RH power bat is the way to go, but I'll throw out this name for you: Mike Dunn of the Marlins.

This shouldn't be a surprise: Stanton.

A Rios or M Morse would both be good OF targets.

Somewhat more out of the box I'd love to get Young from the Phillies and have him in the 2 hole. He can play 3B and Frazier goes to LF.

    1. Stanton
    2. A.Gordon
    3. Rios
    4. Bautista
    5. Ellsbury (assumes the Red Sox will fall out of contention)

At first, I thought you were talking about getting Delmon Young for 3b.

    Yeah, Delmon...not so much.

I didn't see it earlier but KLW had the same idea just a couple of posts up.

Michael Young would also bring a lot of that winner/scrappy vetness with him. The more I think of it the more I like that idea but the downside would be A) his 3B defense and B) Dusty using him properly (a lot of good is negated if Cozart is still hitting 2nd).

Personally, I'd target 1990 Bo Jackson.

Per your rules, you did NOT say time travel wasn't allowed.

Seriously though, can you just imagine how PERFECT he'd fit on the Reds right now? LF, cleanup, right handed, speed, defense.

In all my years of watching baseball I've had many "what if" moments regarding players who didn't turn out like I thought or got injured, but none came close to the "what if" regarding Bo. The things he could do on the field were just incredible.

I must admit I first saw Young as a target in a thread in the Sun Deck a couple of weeks ago. It seemed to make sense once I looked at it.

If Raul is the Reds' answer, I don't want to know the question.

Ibanez bats left. This has been covered. Dusty won't bat lefty, lefty, left.

Trying to be realistic and not list a young player that a rebuilding team would see as a foundational piece...

    Reds trade:
    RHP Mike Leake
    OF Billy Hamilton
    IF Henry Rodriguez

    Royals trade:
    RHP James Shields

Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Who is a vet with a reasonable 1 year contract on a non-contending team who has 8 homeruns in 102 at bats a slugging percentage of .532 and an OPS+ of 122 that could be a bat off the bench?

Some of the moves that help a playoff team are the little moves to bolster the bench. One of the Reds bigger issues at the moment is lack of a formidable bat off the bench. (This is partially because of a lack of a bat and partially due to lack of BIG issues.) Having someone more reliable off the bench as a PH option than Mike Leake would be nice.

With you 100% on Ibanez having PH value.

I'd rather have him being our best chance off the bench than Xman or Lutz.
