    Minor League Updates: Tuesday 5/28/2013

    Columbus is at Louisville.

Tony Cingrani is on the mound for the Bats and has an easy 1-2-3 first. Billy Hamilton leads off the bottom of the first with a single to left. And then proceeds to steal second (27) on the first pitch. He advances to third on a ground ball to short and scores on a Felix Perez sac fly. The quintessential Billy Hamilton. 1-0 Bats.

Cingrani walks three in the second but no damage is done as he strikes out the side as well. Cingrani with by far his worst start of the season. He gave up one earned run. He is through for the night. 5IP 3H 1R 1ER 5BB 9K. 0.37 ERA/

Not much doing for the Bats' bats. Burriss and Perez have added singles. And as I type that Louisville plates two runs in the fifth. Burriss reaches second on an error and scores on a Corky Miller single. Ray Chang doubles Miller to third and Hamilton's sac fly brings him home. 3-1 Bats.

Dayton jumping on South Bend early with a run in the first and three more in the second.

Zach Vincej has singled in a pair. Gelalich has singled, doubled and driven in a run. His average is up to .284. Brandon Dailey is catching and making his 2013 debut. He has doubled in a run and scored a run.
Drew Cisco has hung goose eggs in his first two trips to the mound.

Gelalich added another single. 3-3, BA up to .288. Is he ever going to hit a home run?

    No Jesse Winker tonight.

Hessman adds a 2 run tater following a Soto double. McDougal came on and surrendered a run in 1.2

Former Red Jeremy Hermida is 0-2 with a walk, hitting .235 for the Clippers of Cbus.

With one big swing, Tanner Ranier puts another 3 on the board for the Dragons, and...

Gets his batting average over the Mendoza line!

He's actually hitting pretty well in May after a horrid, horrid April

Sharky has tossed three scoreless in Pensacola. Lohman has singled in Mattair for the game's lone run.

Yelich is 0-2, hitting only .266 for the Jacksonville Sons, farm club of the San Diego Padres

Gee whiz, Cisco with another swell outing as the Dragons are on the smiling side of the scoreboard against South Bend. 6IP 7H 1BB 6K 1ER

Arias is 2-3, average up to .263, still young and starting to look like a commodity again.

    Louisville nails it down, 5-2.

Reineke works a scoreless final 2.1 with 4Ks.

SWEET GEORGIA BROWN, Jesus Adames and Austin Salter each come in for 2/3 and give up 5 and 3 runs, respectively. Dayton trails 9-8 in the bottom of the eighth as they pick up the ash.

Sharky Rogers went six shutout innings, giving up just two hits. His ERA is now 1.73. He also doubled and scored a run as the Blue Wahoos lead 2-0 heading into the 7th.

Were the Dragons playing out in Colorado? That 8-1 lead vanished in the blink of an eye.

Time for Rogers and Corcino to swap spots?

I also think Cisco could be in line for a midseason promotion to Bakersfield, along with Robert Stephenson.

Nice to see Gelalich and Rahier start to hit a bit. For Gelalich it's about time considering his age, although his dearth of power is still disturbing for a corner OF.

Two up and two down for the farmhands last night. Louisville clipped Columbus 5-2, while Pensacola blanked Jacksonville 2-0. Bakersfield fell short in a pitcher's duel 2-1. While the Dragons hairballed an 8-1 lead, falling 9-8 to South Bend.

Starting pitching was good to very good:
    Cingrani 5IP 3H 1R 1ER 5BB 9K. (Cingrani's first earned run given up on the season)
    Rogers 6IP 2H 0R 0ER 3BB 3K. (ERA down to 1.73)
Cisco 6IP 7H 1R 1ER 1BB 6K. (In line for the win until the bullpen coughed up the lead)
    Moscot 6IP 4H 2R 2ER 2BB 3K. (Fourth straight solid start)

    Relievers of note:
    Reineke 2.1IP 3H 0R 0ER 0BB 4K. Starter came out of the pen.
Lee Hyde and Loek Van Mil combined for 3 innings of scoreless baseball.
    Jamie Walczak made his '13 debut a good one. 2.0IP 1H 0R 0ER 0BB 3K.
Alejandro Chacin stayed hot with a spotless inning.

    Stickmen:
Mike Hessman was 2-4, the big shot a two-run home run (12).
    Emmanuel Burriss 2-3.
    Bryson Smith 2-4.
Sharky helped out his own cause by doubling and coming around to score.
Ryan Wright is definitely zoned in. 3-4 with a pair of doubles.
Juan Silverio went 3-4 to push his average back up over the .300 mark.
    Jeff Gelalich went 3-5
Joe Terry numbered a home run among his three base knocks. He is hitting .333.
    Tanner Rahier had a three-run bomb (6).
Brandon Dailey, just up from extended spring training, made his catching debut a success. He went 2-4, both doubles.
Junior Arias was 2-4 as well.

I love the .200 ISO from a SS/3B 19 year old in the MWL. Rahier looked very good when I saw him play earlier this month and I am going to forgive the low BA/OBP due to his age and a .200 BABIP. I am sure we will see his BA/OBP increase as the year goes on. I believe he is only in Dayton because of injuries to the squad. He may end the year in Billings where he would be more age-appropriately placed and I could see him putting up some pretty good numbers there. Let's also hope that his 3.8% BB rate improves drastically. Even though he only hit .192 last year, he still did walk at a 9.8% rate. If he could put that together with a .250-.260 BA and his pop, his bat would play very nicely.
