I like the fact that a dude already guaranteed to make $200m+ still cares about his job.

The thread title made me think of this scene from the greatest television show of all time:

What next, a thread about Votto's bowl movements?

I don't give a flying %#$&* if Votto wants to swear when he gets out.

I only care that he's best hitter in the world.

    And he's ours.

    So Redeye...

Calling BP a hot-dog is racist. Using Choo's name a la "Choo-Choo Train" is derogatory. Starting multiple threads on one player is unacceptable. Don't even get you started on the Cleveland Indians...

But it's kosher to link a youtube video with a ton of f-bombs. (Not that I mind)

    I don't get you man.

Haha! Yes, I am a mystery wrapped inside a conundrum, my friend.

Seriously, for the record though -- The Wire is to my mind one of the most progressive television shows ever made. I could care less about f-bombs as long as they aren't aimed at offending particular groups. And I certainly don't care about them if they are part of the characterizations in a television show. Or part of what makes our best player reach his full potential.

Language is always political. But I'm a progressive, not a puritan.

As a father. I only have a problem with it if he was directing it towards someone. Which he is not and is only using it in frustration himself. I see no reason two words that mean the same thing are somehow viewed differently.

If he yelled "crap" after striking out no one would have a problem with it and would probably make fun of him for it. Yet other letters that mean same thing are somehow bad? I never understood the whole cursing thing and I am someone who pretty much never does it. Like I said different story if using it do demean someone but in that scenario any words you use would be impolite.

I don't typically swear in normal life, and I cringe a little when I hear Joey drop three in a row after a strikeout. Mostly it just seems unbecoming.

That said, it doesn't bother me too much. The worst part about it is when the announcer (ahem...Grande) feels the need to apologize for it after the fact. Just leave it alone; we don't need to rehash it, particularly since many people didn't even hear it in the first place.

Getting unreasonably angry at making an out seemed to work pretty well for Paul O'Neill. Maybe Votto's onto something.

Agreed. But on the flip side, I really don't think it would be that difficult for someone to pull Joey aside and simply say "try to watch your language a bit please". It won't stop it completely, but it couldn't hurt.

Re: The Votto f-bombs: Good or bad?

I hear a lot of parents use the excuse of not wanting to explain things to their children. That's your job as a parent. It's not my job to put my son in a bubble and shelter him from the world till he turns 18, then pop the bubble and say "Well hope you know how to deal with it kid". I have had discussions with friends who won't let their 10 year old watch/read the Harry Potter movies/books, because they are afraid of subjecting them to the violence. Again it's your job as a parent to prepare your child for the real world.

So I guess I wrote all that to say, I don't have a problem with Votto dropping the F-bomb in frustration. If that prompts someone to have a conversation with their kids about appropriate behavior, is that really the worst thing to happen?
