KC Royals name George Brett hitting coach....

Interim basis, Brett isn't sure he'll like coaching so it's temporary. Interesting. Not many better hitters I've ever seen in my lifetime. But many great hitters have been incapable of teaching others. We'll see.

Oops, wasn't finished with the post.

George Brett was an AWESOME player, one of my favorites growing up along with the 'Big Red Machine' and of course the Cardinals. I really hate he gets almost as much notoriety (sp?) for the pine tar incident instead of the fact he could flat out hit the ball well. Hope it works out for him - he's 1-0 so far; Boggs needs to get gone

I can remember rooting for the Royals in the 1980 World Series because by my 12 year old logic, I felt if someone hit .390 then they deserved to win the World Series.
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

I agree, it's unfortunate that he's become associated with the pine tar incident, and another incident that will remain nameless (I won't link the youtube video, but it's there...and it's hilarious). He was amazing at the plate. I hope this move isn't just to placate fans, but they actually give Brett a position where he can really help out KC's offense.

Think he will be teaching from "Lau's Laws on Hitting?"

A great book, I might add.

As a Yankees fan whose lone real childhood memory of George Brett's playing days is the pine tar incident, I grew up thinking the guy was a dipwit.

As a baseball fan who grew up to enjoy learning as much as he can about the game, I came to appreciate George Brett a lot more in his retirement days.

Now he's a batting coach, and in his introductory press conference, he declared "Solo home runs are rally killers." I may have to go back to my original stance. At least, on an interim basis.

Bump for George Brett as a hitting coach:

Royals 9-4 since he took the job, 43 runs scored in 13 games = 3.31 runs per game average.

Some luck but wins are wins - happy for the Royals to look a bit more respectable.

From what I'm understanding, the Royals are using an optimized lineup as well. It could be George Brett but I'm willing to bet it's more the fact that they're batting players in a logical way.
