    Best defensive players by position

I saw this topic in the ORG, and thought it was a good one. I was born in '77, so I didn't really get to see Bench play much.

Anyway, I'm going to list the top 3 at each position I've seen in my lifetime in order.

    C--Pudge, Carter, Mauer
    IB-Teixeira, Helton, Votto
    2B-Phillips, Alomar, Biggio
    SS-Smith, Larkin, Vizquel
    3B-Schmidt, Rolen, Chavez
    OF-Griffey, Evans, Ichiro

I guess you're saying you're not familiar with MVP Joe Mauer of Twins? He's a guy that's won 3 batting titles, 3 SS's and 3 GG's. I've seen him play plenty, and when healthy, the complete package. Some of his stats are down a bit only due to injury, but you know this.

Since I said defense I know where you are going. Again, I didn't start this thread for Cards fans to go on about Molina. If you want to rank him in as one of the top catchers, that's fine. I'm not going to harass you about it. These are my rankings in my lifetime, and I'm asking other REDS fans on their opinion. I notice fans over at the ORG aren't too happy with Cards fans on this board either.

You could always just give your rankings and put your golden boy on there instead of replying to a thread ripping on me and giving no insight to the topic. Maybe you didn't notice I put Ozzie Smith as the best defensive SS, or that I put Rolen as the 2nd best defensive 3B, I don't know. Please quit stalking and hijacking my threads if this is the route you want to go.

Did anyone say anything about Molina? It's just Mauer is a curious choice. He's never been noted for his defense and he's -5 on defensive runs saved in his career. All the advanced defensive metrics show he's a minus defensive catcher in his career. I would think, if you actually are a Reds fans that watches Reds games, that Hannigan would be on your list because he's very good, in fact way better than Mauer on defense. Just as you have a right here to give your opinion, others have a right to question the logic of your opinion.

I haven't been alive long enough to see some of the old school players play so most of mine will be from 2000 on.

    C. Pudge or Yadi
    1B Pujols
    2B Phillips
    3B Rolen
    SS Tulo
    OF Ichiro, Edmonds, Brett Gardner

Re: Best defensive players by position

I am going to list a lot of Reds because that is what I've seen on day to day basis. It is hard for me to judge others as well. With that I am just going off the top of my head and not looking at any stats. First memories watching in '72

    C Bench, Pudge, Molina
    1B K. Hernandez, Driessen
2B Phillips, Alomar, Reese, Morgan, Whitaker
    SS Smith, Larkin, Visquel, Concepcion
    3B Robinson, Schmidt, Bell
    RF Parker, Valentine,
    CF Griffey, Davis, Hunter, Lynn
    LF Bonds, Yaz, R. Henderson

Jack of all trades, Rose. He just attacked all positions on defense and did at least an adequate job.

I honestly think Rolen is the best defensive 3Bman ever.
