    Minor League Updates Thursday 6/06/2013

    Norfolk at Louisville.

Bats took a quick 1-zip lead in the second. Phipps doubled and was driven in by Burriss, who had singled. Negron also has a double.

Daniel Corcino quickly gave that run back and more, surrendering 4 in the top of the third.

    Bats trail 4-1.

Burriss doubles and Corky sends him home with a line single. 4-2 now after four. And Corcino gives that one back as well in the top of the fifth. An HBP and two singles lead to a run. Runners on the corner with two outs as the Bats pitching coach heads out to the mound. 5-2 Norfolk.

Pitching change. Arredondo on in relief. Corcino's line: 4.2IP 10H 5R 5ER 2BB 3K. A well-rested Arredondo ends the rally by striking out the first batter he sees on three pitches.

Soto doubles, Burriss (3-3) singles, sac fly. Bats hanging around, trailing 5-3. Burriss started the season 0-24. Since that point on (including today) he is batting .291.

The combination of Arredondo and Whelan get slapped around for four runs in the top of the seventh.

Burriss goes 4-4. Corky Miller pitches two innings of spotless relief. 6 up, 6 down. 6 fly balls. Phipps and Negron each stroke a single and a double.

    Bats lose 9-3.

Pensacola is trying to squeeze two games in today.

The first is scoreless after four. Josh Smith has been a little wild, four walks in four innings. But has kept the Biscuits off the board. Ryan LaMarre has the lone hit for the Fish, a double. Ryan was then promptly picked off.

One hit through five for the Wahoos. Josh Smith allowed an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning. Pensacola trails 1-0.

Pensacola parlays singles by Chang, Durango and Mattair into a 2-1 lead.

Josh Smith goes five strong: 5IP 3H 1R 0ER 4BB 4K. Lee Hyde and Loek Van Mil with hitless frames. Josh Smith was roughed up in his first two starts. In his 10 starts since he has gone 58.2 innings. He has allowed 45 hits. Walked 20 and struck out 56. ERA in that span is 2.15.

    Pensacola takes the opener 2-1.

Dayton is down in Bowling Green. No score after one. Sal Romano had a 1-2-3 frame, whiffing a pair. Seth Mejias-Brean has been the lone Dragon runner, doubling in the first.

Ramirez, Hudson and Vincej with consecutive base knocks in the second. Dayton leads 1-0.

Romano gives up four in the bottom of the second. Winker triples in the third but is left stranded. BG up by a score of 4-1.

Romano: 5IP 6H 4R 4ER 2BB 4K. Outside of the second he pitched well. Amezcua gives up a pair of runs in relief. Wandy Peralta is on and has pitched 1.2 innings of hitless ball.

Jesse Winker is 2-3. A single, a triple and a walk. Joe Hudson has a pair of singles. Dayton trails 6-1 late.

    DSL Reds won 6-4.

Diohanky Mejia had a pair of singles. Six players had one hit each.

Nice relief work. John Zapata worked two hitless frames, striking out two. Luis Gonzalez was fairly dominant in his two innings on the mound. He struck out 5 of the 6 hitters he faced.

Diohanky? Does that translate to God's Kleenex?

Reds need to either DL or demote Corcino. He is just not getting it done.

Wait a minute. I just realized that the DSL Reds and DSL Rojos are two different teams. Apparently, the Rojos are the team the Reds split with Arizona.

The offense has picked up in the nightcap between Pensacola and Montgomery. Score is tied 3-3 after two innings of play. Shaun Ellis is getting a rare start. Ryan LaMarre has doubled, scored a run and driven in one. Durango, Bowe, Chang and Lohman all have singled.

Yeah, there's got to be something physically wrong there, right? Corcino handled a two level jump last year with aplomb. It's hard to believe he mentally couldn't handle moving up one more level.

On the other hand, Winker is up to a .950 OPS, #2 in the Midwest League. Not bad for a 19-year old (of course, another 19-year old is leading the league).

Pensacola took two yesterday by winning the nightcap 6-5. It was a reliever's game. And outside of Shaun Ellis the pen did well.

After a ragged start, Drew Hayes, Chris Manno and Lee Hyde held Montgomery to a lone tally in the final four plus innings.
Theo Bowe went 2-3, scored two runs, drove in two and hit his second home run of the season.
Ray Chang also had two hits, drove in two and is now hitting .364 for Pensacola. Devin Lohman was 2-3 as well.

Lee Hyde pitched a combined 3 shutout innings, earning a hold and a save.

Bakersfield won by the score of 5-2.

Carlos Contreras allowed seven hits and three walks in five innings but limited the damage to one unearned run. He struck out only one batter on the night.
Jake Johnson came out of the pen and contributed three innings of acceptable work. Pat Doyle earned save number one with a scoreless ninth.

Juan Perez doubled, homered and walked. He scored twice and drove in one. Chris Berset also had a solo homer. Selsky and Silverio doubled. Silva tripled. Blaze had just seven hits but six went for extra bases.
