The plan this year it for him to pitch. Which I believe is the actual plan, but they had to tell him he could hit in order to sign him. They will probably send him to instructs and let him do both and try to convince him there to work as a pitcher.

Letting guys do both hasn't exactly worked out well and has delayed the timeline for plenty of guys. It is a bad idea and I doubt that teams really like the idea of it, but every so often have to tell someone they can do it while the team tries to figure out a way to get them to do whichever one they prefer.

So I updated the spreadsheet (again) and that makes it so Reds only have $282K left. I don't think Abreu is signing

So if the Reds have just under $300,000 left, what does that get them? Any ideas how it might be spent?

Can't the Reds exceed the cap by 5% and not suffer a penalty?

That would give them like another 300k or something beyond 282k to spend, if my rough math is correct.

Perhaps, not. I noticed that the Reds were heavy into LH batters with power potential, Abreu, Freeland, Krupa, Lofstrom, Collins, even Benintendi to a lesser extent. They seem to like that for GAB (carry to RCF?). My guess is that they get at least one, and perhaps two from that list.

Ironically, IMO, it is the weakness of RH hitting that has hurt them on the road against good teams.

The Reds can offer just over $692,000 to a player at this point (and pay another $220,000 and change as a fine) without losing a draft pick.

Interesting. Is that 1 player or could that be used towards multiple players?

Anything spent over $100,000 counts toward the pool. So if they spread the money around, they only have $592,000 "extra" dollars to spend between all of those players.
