Re: 2013 Official Draft Picks and Signings Thread

Is Daniel Wright the only college senior we drafted in the top 10 rounds? If so, him and Chad Jones seem to be the only two guys that are locks to sign below slot.

The Franklin pick will look much better if we can sign him well below slot. That could have been the rationale behind the Franklin, Armstrong and Weiss picks. Overdraft them early knowing they will sign below slot and then have third round money left over to sign Morales, Abreu or Benintendi.

I did not know that. So if a $149K slot player were to sign for $49K, the Reds would have $100K to put against players outside of the top 10. If that slot player did not sign at all, then the Reds would not only lose the player, but also all of the $149K.

    Yes to what Doug said.

I'm not marking #28 as Likely To Sign..... but I suspect he will. He doesn't graduate till the 14th, and he can't sign till he graduates.

Here's a video where he talk about his decision. His Twitter account has Reds logo and I think he's doing the interview in a Reds T-Shirt.

My vibe on this is....he's signing.

28th rounder Carter Austin is mulling it over. the article has a few interesting tidbits ont he draft process and scouts.
    http://www.pressconnects.com/article...er-Austin-pick

“I hadn’t talked to the Reds in a week or two, and I was kind of nervous about that,” Austin said. “The last day, I was getting depressed, and I didn’t think it would happen... Around the 20th round, I got a call from a scout who asked if I was willing to sign. I said, ‘Yeah, I’m still here,’ and that was kind of exciting. It took another hour and a half for them to find a spot where they could take me.”
Austin has signed a letter of intent to play for Bucknell University this upcoming year, and has not yet decided whether or not to sign with the Reds.

“I’ve definitely discussed it, mostly with my dad,” Austin said. “I’ve talked to my college coach, and he was very supportive... He obviously wants me to play for him. It’s a tough decision, but I want to get everyone’s input and seek out all the information I can.”

“It’s a win-win for him,” Ray said. “It’s a great opportunity to go to Bucknell and to be drafted by the Reds. We have to let it all digest and see where it goes.”

The Reds went over slot to sign their fifth-round pick, according to Callis (Twitter link), inking prep shortstop Cory Thompson for $367K (slot was $275K). Callis adds that Thompson is a solid runner with a good glove and some pop in his bat, but he also has a fastball in the low 90s.

I keep wondering if he's related to Gene Krupa, one of the greatest drummers of all time.

Posted this on spreadsheet. Now you have an example of how someone over slot posts in red.
