Why did Jones have to get drafted anyway? He was previously drafted twice and he is what 3 years out of college. Could he not have just been signed as a free agent?

Until you have signed a contract, you are always draft eligible assuming you also fill the requirements of being a resident of the correct place and so on.

In 2011 the Reds drafted a 27-year-old Cuban who played a year of independent ball.

The Reds have signed third-rounder Mark Armstrong, Callis reports (via Twitter). Armstrong, a high school right-hander who had committed to Pitt, signed for exactly his assigned slot value of $496K.

Ouch. $10K for a 10th round pick. That's worse than when they gave Pigott (9th round pick) just $40K last year. That's the risk the college seniors run though. I'm sure they're just happy to be playing professional baseball, but the Reds sure aren't afraid to play hardball with the college seniors. They know they have no other option. At least, not a reasonable one.

The Reds aren't the only team that does this with seniors. They all do it. It really sucks for those guys.

The Merrimack Athletics Male Scholar Athlete of the Year, Mantoni served as the Warriors' primary designated hitter and closer during his impressive senior campaign, one that culminated in a CoSIDA Third-Team Academic All-American selection. The Northbridge, Mass., native also earned Northeast-10 All-Conference Second Team and All-East Region honors.

Mantoni led the Warriors with 36 RBI on 40 hits, adding 15 doubles, a triple and two homers. In late-game relief situations, the senior was equally stellar. Mantoni led the Warriors with eight saves and boasted a 1.61 ERA and 3-0 record in 19 appearances

Oh, I know this. Didn't mean to insinuate this is something only the Reds or a few other teams do. Everyone does it as you said.

Mods, could we do something on the homepage to denote those who are definitely not signing? Maybe italics or something in bold at the end of their information? Might make it easier to follow.

    Ty changed twitter accounts
    https://twitter.com/boyles_ty/

He is finding Arizona to be hot and dull. He is also doing Ask Ty question sessions. He tweets alot and only snippets are interesting from a baseball point of view.
