Official 2013 Draft Day 2 Thread

Heading into Day 2 and Round 3, here are my top 10 guys left on the board. If the Reds can snag 1-2 of these guys today, I'll be happy:

    1. Jon Denney HS C
    2. JaCoby Jones LSU 2B
    3. Cord Sandberg HS OF

    [big gap]

    4. Kyle Serrano HS RHP (maybe unsignable at this point)
    5. Connor Jones HS RHP (ditto)
    6. Garrett Hampson HS SS
    7. Stephen Tarpley JuCo LHP
    8. Kent Emanuel LHP UNC
    9. Bobby Wahl RHP Mississippi
    10. Jan Hernandez HS 3B (Reds don't have a great track record with Puerto Rican prep infielders- Gabe Rosa, Jose Ronda, Neftali Soto, etc.)

    Other names to watch

Ryan Boldt HS OF - don't love his "all-around, nothing spectacular" game, but with his injury he could be value with a 3rd or 4th round pick - if he'll sign
Cavan Biggio HS 2B - ditto, but could be good value in 4th or 5th round
Tyler O'Neill HS C - probably the best catcher remaining after Denney. Reds like to draft Canadian players (Votto, Lotzkar, Hildenbrandt etc.)
Jeremy Martinez HS C - the other next best catcher
Mason Smith HS OF - I like him, but what kind of competition was he playing against in Idaho?

    Faulkner State star Colin Bray.

Hope Braves or Reds grab him.

Re: Official 2013 Draft Day 2 Thread

I just can't wait until today begins because it will immediately bring the third round. That's when Chris Buckley and his staff usually knock one outta the park. They're good in the first round, often times really bad in the second round (with one glaring exception being someone named Billy Hamilton) and great in the third round.

Think about some of the guys the Reds have gotten recently in the third round. Cingrani is of course the biggest, but they've also landed Dan Langfield (great year last season at Billings, hurt so far this year), Donnie Joseph (main chip in Broxton trade) and Zach Stewart (main chip in Rolen trade; also a future Cy Young award winner).

So, which college pitcher are we getting this year in the third round that will be a complete steal?

Re: Official 2013 Draft Day 2 Thread

This is the day the reveals how good a team is at the draft.

The first two rounds are rather easy and obvious. But in the later rounds, the really good teams are able to find solid role players to help fill out the MLB roster. Teams need to develop their own middle relievers and bench guys, and these rounds are where to find them.

If a team is successful in these later rounds, they don't need to sign guys like Izturis and Parra to fill out the MLB roster.

Re: Official 2013 Draft Day 2 Thread

I don't follow the scouting sites well enough to have any opinions on specific players, but hopefully the Reds fill up on up-the-middle position players, as the system is pretty much devoid of talent in that area (especially at SS and C).

Why has Denney not been drafted yet? Is there something wrong with him? Is he going to college? Seems strange.

In football that's true. In baseball, I disagree. Nothing is easy and obvious, especially after the top 3 picks. I believe its above 50% of major league starters who were drafted were drafted in the top 2 rounds, so I would disagree with your thesis. The bust rate is high enough in the top 2 rounds (more comparable to Day 2 of the NFL Draft) that what you say above is just not true.

If a team finds one future starter in the later rounds for an entire draft, its a success. Scouting directors are judged primarily by what happens in the first two rounds.

Signing guys like Izturius and Parra are not what handicaps a big league team. Signing big name guys (frontline starters and All-Stars) because you couldn't draft homegrown talent in the first two rounds is.

    Agree 100% with this perspective.

Is there a way to follow the draft without video?

If the Reds can land one of the big three of Denney, J.Jones or Sandberg today, this draft instantly goes from a C+ to a B+ IMO. Same for Serrano if they can sign him.

Of course, grading a draft is a ridiculous exercise.

Tarpley is the guy who'd make me do a happy dance.

Sandberg would be kind of exciting too.

Serrano said last night he is definitely going to Tennessee to play for his dad last night after the first round.
