The Reds are definitely a post season team this year the way it looks. The Reds are a team that is capable of catching fire in October and going all the way as well. The Bucs will break the losing season thing this year but may be just shy of a playoff berth, the other WC will come out of the NL West I think.
Don't give up, still 99 games left this year. I was surprised that the Cards took 2 out of 3 this weekend, I had them pegged for 1 out of 3 TBH with the way CIN has played at GABP this year.

an awful homestand has left this team is looking heavily flawed at the moment. the bullpen is suddenly suspect. there are too many automatic outs in the lineup including hanigan and cozart. votto is on pace for 75 rbi's...that's not cutting it. the cardinals and rockies absolutely blistered Reds pitching.

    Cozart

In the minors you have the great Lohman, Greene and LeMarre. These guys are developed so badly....they do not know where the opposite field is and the ability to hit there, on rare occasions. Guessing wrong about what 80% of the time if not more. Horrible developing of hitting that is astonishing for an organization that used to do that in its sleep.

Bullpens are most volatile part of any baseball team. Last year the Reds had the best of it. This year not so much. Injuries and inconsistencies are really hurting them. They are going to have to make some move for a lefty specialist very soon if Marshall is out for much longer. His absence is really hurting the team now.

Sure there's something they can do. Trade for bullpen help before the deadline. And /or bring up some young guys who are doing well in AAA or AA. The team is scuffling (to put it mildly) at the end of games without Marshall. And it's likely you need to replace some of the others, even after he comes back.

If you had a better bullpen you would have (at least) stayed in the game longer.

Cardinals should easily win the division and have the best record in the NL and probably MLB.
I'm sure the Cards thank you for the compliment, but there are still almost 100 games to go, and we only have a four game lead. We have three rookies in the starting rotation, none of which have ever approached pitching 200 innings at any level. One or more of them may need to be shut down at some point. We have a bunch of rookies in the bullpen as well. They have done very well to this point, but what happens when they get around the league a couple of times is at present unknown.

Reds should make the playoffs. I don't see any other NL teams that are lighting it up.
I agree the Reds should get in. Two wildcards make that more likely than not. Pittsburgh, two of AZ, SF & CO, and possibly DC or Philly are the competition. And once you get in, anything can happen.

CTrent said Dusty seriously considered it. If his spot hadn't come up, he probably would have.

“We were hoping Chapman could go two,” Baker said. “But we couldn’t chance that. He was the third hitter the next inning. We don’t have a one- or two-man bullpen. We’ve got to get those guys together.”

Baker says he’ll resist the urge to go more than one inning with Chapman and Broxton.

“We’ve got other guys to do that job,” he said. “We talked to Broxton about that. That’s how he hurt his arm in L.A. going two-inning stints. We’re trying to piece this together. You really can’t hurt your two horses at the end by going away from the other guys.”

Yeah, the bullpen was a let down last night...no doubt. But I'm sorry, this game was handed to the Cards long before the bullpen even came into the game. Lots of mental mistakes and blown opportunities earlier in the game by the position players. Joey at 3rd. Not getting the bunt down. Bunting with 2 outs?!? Several things done wrong last night...the bullpen was just icing on the cake.

If Dusty throws Chapman two innings and it does not go perfectly, imagine Reds Zone outrage for throwing the closer two innings! Despite all the winning, Dusty can do no right with some people. Certainly reminds me of my days at Arkansas when Nolan Richardson was winning titles and going to the Final 4 and all people did was gripe about his sub patterns, etc.

except he could have done the double switch and left himself the option and wasn't the pitcher's spot second the next inning -- if so -- how could he even say he would have considered it if the pitcher's spot hadn't come up?

plus -- did Chapman even throw 12 pitches?

    yeah yeah --I know

Double switch with who? Mesoraco for Hanny? I know he hates to burn his backup catcher. Right or wrong, I know he does. Izturis for Cozart? Maybe.

It couldn't be the LF'er because that's too soon in the order and probably negates the strategy.

Why would you switch with Hannigan? He led off the 9th with the pitcher's spot second in the inning ---

How about Frazier's spot (6th) - or Cozart's spot? Hanrahan never made an appearance in the game - he was available.

The idea would be to give the option of using Chapman for more than the 12 pitches he threw.

I just don't buy his answer that he would have considered using Chapman more if the pitcher's spot had not come up.

And I STILL think the Reds will catch the Whiney Ones.
