    He was out of options

IMO there was an underlying issue. Dunno what, but something. If he were 30 at the time, just breaking in, maybe.
Wlad actually qualified for a 4th year option exception so he was given an extra option year. He was given plenty of rope. He just wasn't a good enough hitter to play a corner position or a good enough defender to play up the middle. He was going to be a role player.

Never understood why the Reds got rid of him.
Because he's a tweener and is more like DT Cromer than Michael Morse?

Yeah and why did we get rid of Roberto Petagine?

That's an amazing statement."

Why not? If your roster dictates that his best use is a platoon, I don't see what's wrong with it. He makes the same as our setup man in the bullpen -- it's not like we're talking about Andrew McCutchen here.

Wlad might have been a tweener. I just think there was more to it than just that. For some reason the Reds sold him for peanuts. They didn't need the 100K they got for him. Just a strange situation. He's gone over there, thrived and is likely making or on the verge of making millions there.

I was not, but I was around for some of his later incarnations, and I love this thread.

There wasn't a long line of buyers and he wasn't in the front of the Reds line of options for corner/4th outfielders.

Maybe not, but selling a player's rights to a Japanese team isn't a real common occurrence. Sure it happens, but it isn't all that common. It was just an odd situation to me.

Also, at the time, the Reds really didn't have an exceptionally better player for LF than Wlad.

I think we are going to see more sales like that in the future.

As for not having a player better than him, I don't see it, he couldn't win a slot and that fact and having to leave the USA to play pretty much says all of baseball had players they thought were better than him

Dude is playing in JAPAN. No MLB team wants him. If they did he would be here.

Ahh, remembering what it was like to be a Reds fan 10 years ago gives me even more appreciation for the current state of the franchise.
