Things I want to learn how to do

These are things I want to learn how to do (before I die):

    A. Play the guitar.
    B. Play chess.
    C. Change the oil in my car.
    D. Learn intermediate Spanish. Please note that I took beginning Spanish quite a few times. I used to work in a paint store so I'm fluent enough to get by.

What say you RZ? What do you want to do?

Wow, If I were you I could literally die.

Mine mostly involves travel. Need to think on it more.

I'd like to learn to play bass guitar and learn Japanese.

Re: Things I want to learn how to do

When I lived in Sydney, I decided I wanted to learn to surf. Problem was, I couldn't swim. So I found someone who tried to teach me, and found out I have an actual phobia--whenever my head went underwater, had a panic attack. I have since discovered that what I remember as a minor incident at a swimming pool when I was small was actually a near drowning, and this is likely the cause. Funny thing is, I'm not actually afraid of being in the water; I just have panic attacks when I go under. So, surfing's out.

That only leaves learning the guitar. I'm kind of old for that now, but I still want to.

Although I would like to learn to speak/read French as well, so I could write a good bio of Lafayette. I don't think an even-toned one exists. I'd also like to learn Chinese, simply because I've had a lot of Chinese friends over the years. Seems a bit difficult, though.

I've done b and c. I'm not very good at chess because I tend to live in the moment. I like backgammon better.

    Nice thread.

I want to learn woodworking, like building tables and maybe a chest of drawers or something.
    Lift weights well.
Cook. Grilling does not apply. I can grill just fine.
    Piano.
    Hunt.

    Maybe in that order.

I can sing and even read music, but man, I can't make heads or tails of a guitar.

I've got A, B, and D. In my experience, you could learn A and B no problem. Just takes lots of repetition. D will be tough, as learning a language in your adult life is one of the more difficult things to develop. The best way to go would be spend some time in a Spanish-speaking country, and you just kind of get it by osmosis. As smart as you tell us you are, you could do it, I think.

Celestial Navigation and other topics related to off shore sailing.
    Calculus
    Welding
    Singing

I have a guitar, but have all but given up on it, realizing along the way that I must have a learning disability that prevents me from grasping music theory. This, I believe, is related to my problems with math (or that Elder High School may have employed the worst Algebra teacher in the history of pedagogy back in the late 70s. He was a good CC coach, though.) I am trying to relearn math topics with my son, who due to difficulties related to autism needs a lot of help. The funny thing is that I can see that we share some traits, related to math issues; he has a very intuitive grasp of math, but struggles mightily with the book learning.

Changing oil involves watching a YouTube video and a trip to NAPA.

Same amount of work as grilling a hamburger.
Hugs, smiling, and interactive Twitter accounts, don't mean winning baseball. Until this community understands that we are cursed to relive the madness.
