    No-hitter tidbit

Tomorrow is June 13. On June 13 of last year, Matt Cain pitched the fourth no-hitter of the season (fifth if you count the combined effort of Mariners pitchers against the Dodgers last June 8). Admittedly last year felt like an anomaly, but we've had none this year; Homer Bailey's still stands as the most recent no-hitter. I'm just wondering if there's any identifiable reason for this to be happening? Did I miss a change to the mound or something? Or just chance?

For the record, there were six no-hitters each in 2010 and 2012 (again, seven with the combined M's effort), three in 2011.
There is no such thing as a pitching prospect.

I have no clue as to the answer, but there certainly have been years with no no-hitters. And the combined no-hitters do count. There have been 10 such games in MLB history, the first being thrown by Babe Ruth and Ernie Shore in 1917 where Ruth walked the first batter and was thrown out for arguing with the ump. The runner then was thrown out attempting to steal and Shore proceeded to retire the next 26 batters.

    Here's the list:

Those three years are not the norm. Especially '10 and '12.

Hmm. Time for Latos to step up and fill the 2013 void.

I remember (all too well) one team this year that only had 1-hit in back-to-back games! And that was against a team that so far has played .500 ball.

"The randomness of baseball" is the answer about 60% of the time to any baseball question.

"Small sample size" is the answer the other 40% of the time.

    Here both are correct.

Thanks all. I figured it was just the way of things, but occasionally something like "oh, we moved the mound back five feet and put pitchers on a protein-free diet" go right past me.

Maybe a different dye for the threads in the baseball? Chaos theory? Sun spots? Gaussian storms? The earth's rotation slowed? Global warmng? The year ending in 13?

I like the randomness of baseball. Sounds Einsteinian.

We had the right team, just not the right pitcher.
