Rockies designate Eric Young Jr. for assignment

He's had a tough May/June and isn't a great defensive player, but he had a pretty solid 2012 and I peg him as a late bloomer. Can play 2b/3b/of alright. In games when he starts, he's a #2 hitter capable of .350+ obp with good speed.

EY Jr > Lutz, Hannahan, and Robinson

I would consider throwing the Rox a bone and trying to trade for him. I don't think he'll make it through waivers.

That's a surprise. Every time I watch a Rockies game the announcers gush over him. They had the AAA all star game on that he and Stubbs were in and you'd have thought Young was Tebow the way they gushed over him.

Agree. Young had a pretty good 2012 as a utility player. He OPSed over .800, stole 14 bases and hit over .300.

Too bad he doesn't play backup SS.

Late bloomer? He is already 28.

BTW...he has a career .576 OPS away from Coors. Since he has no power, GABP won't help him.

Is this the guy we're talking about?

    Code:

Year Age PA SB BA OBP SLG OPS
    2009 24 61 4 .246 .295 .316 .611
    2010 25 189 17 .244 .312 .285 .597
    2011 26 229 27 .247 .342 .298 .640
    2012 27 196 14 .316 .377 .448 .825
    2013 28 180 8 .242 .290 .352 .641
    5 Yrs 855 70 .261 .329 .342 .671
    162 Game Avg. 443 36 .261 .329 .342 .671
    BABIP
    2009: .295
    2010: .300
    2011: .304
    2012: .367
    2013: .298
    Career: .313

Interestingly, in 2012 he started swinging at more pitches (71.5% vs. career 67.6%) but hitting fewer of them (80.4% vs. 81.4%.)

This year, he's swinging even more (74.4%) and hitting even less (78.5%.)

Couldn't really hurt to take a flier on him if you can stash him in AAA.

Doesn't really fill the Reds need. They need a righty outfielder with power to take over Lutz' spot. If you like Heisey, he's the guy if healthy. That's the hole.

If someone with that profile becomes available, jump on it. Young would simply be a AAA depth move at this point.

Looks like a standard replacement-level, speedy utility guy to me. That's not completely valueless, but unless you can count on that 10% BB rate, I'm not sure he's adding value.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Yeah, I agree that I wouldn't want him if a .300 Obp is going to be the norm, but I suspect he is more like his 2012 numbers n the majors and post-humidor colo springs than what he has done in may and June . I've probably watched half his games as a major leaguer and he tends to press when in slumps and flourish when he gets his swagger on. By all accounts a good clubhouse guy. Worth taking a chance on. More upside than lutz, Robinson, and hannahan and more likely to help this team in 2013

Young's not really my cup of tea, but I'd wager that in a month or so he'd be a huge upgrade over Robinson and unless the light goes on for Hamilton, there really isn't anybody else to plug in there when the clock strikes 12.

Yes. It's a "Where's Waldo?" with Waldo saying "Where's Waldo?" from a giant dialog bubble.

This joke worked out better in my head.
