I remember when Simon made the club, he was destined for garbage time only. He turned out to be a serviceable reliever.

Or Partch having a good outing in Chiicago after about as disasterous start as a rookie could have.

I have no illusions about Villarreal but I'd hope he can relieve better than start and if they get one good inning out of him, then its a victory.

I'd keep Cingrani starting. His future as a starter is important to the team -- even this year, should somebody else go down. You shouldn't be jerking a prized prospect like him around. (You know that Baker will run him out there 5 times in a week if they play a stretch of close games.) If you get towards the end of the year and he's at or near his innings limit, different story. The team is still in good shape, standings wise.

I said this last year. Sometimes the FO and the manager/pitching coach need to show they can get creative and patch the bullpen. Don't panic. Let your #6 starter stay on his routine. You never know when you may need him to plug a much bigger hole than currently exists in the pen.

Ideally, I'd agree, but with both Marshall and Broxton out, this team needs all the quality arms it can get to win games. If a starter is needed, Cingrani can piggyback with Simon, Lecure or a call-up each going 3 innings or so for one start and be ready to go 5 or 6 the second time through the rotation. Stretching him back out isn't a big deal IMO. I do regret lost time in AAA working on secondary stuff, but if innings and work is needed after the season, hello Puerto Rico.

I would rather have one of our best pitchers helping the Reds win games in 2013, not down playing in what are basically exhibition games in the minor leagues. This "Cingrani needs to work on his secondary pitches" stuff is so overblown. He's extremely effective doing exactly what he's been doing. Does he need to improve his secondary pitches? Yes. But he absolutely should be with the Reds helping the Reds in their quest for the playoffs and hopefully more. He is unquestionably one of the top-10 pitchers the Reds have ... and they carry 12. No need to overthink this one. Cingrani needs to be with the big club for good. His future is as a starter, but he's needed as a reliever right now.

Reds: Broxton on the mend
• Pitching coach Bryan Price said it is "very unlikely" that setup man Jonathan Broxton will return from the disabled list on Saturday, the earliest date he is eligible to rejoin the club. Broxton began throwing lightly on Tuesday as he works his way back from a flexor mass strain in his right elbow. Broxton, 2-2 with a 4.33 ERA this season, will initiate a throwing program on Friday.

"He's not pain-free yet," head trainer Paul Lessard said.

If he is not pain free yet it looks like Broxton will out for awhile.
