Villareal sent down.
Sounds like Tony Cingrani is staying to back up Cueto, if needed, after injury. Unclear if Cingrani will stay in the pen after Cueto's start today, or if someone else will come up for the pen.

I hope he stays. The Reds don't have 12 better. If Walt goes out and gets 2 decent arms, they still don't have 12 better. Time to win. Cingrani can add innings and work on off-speed stuff in winter ball if need be.

The problem with that plan is that what happens if Cueto or someone else gets hurt in 3 weeks after Cingrani is in the bullpen? We get to choose a starter from Greg Reynolds, Chad Reineke, Armando Galarraga, Pedro Villarreal or Daniel Corcino to fill in as a starter. I really don't think the Reds want to do that. The downgrade to one of those guys is so huge compared to what is happening in the bullpen that I would be surprised to see that be the move.

Start Cingrani, let him go three. Let Simon go three more and the use the rest of the pen as normal. After that, he should be ready to go 5 or 6, big deal. As many point out about splitting the lefty's, saving Chapman and a myriad of other topics, why give-up what could be an asset on a regular basis in case something else might happen? Especially when the consequence would be roughly 3 innings of 1 game.

I guess we'll disagree. If he's pitching an inning at a time, a jump to 3 innings isn't that big a deal. A jump to 5 or 6 after that still shouldn't be a big deal. This used to happen all the time. If it takes 3 starts to get him to 6 innings so be it. It's still not worth having Ondrusek or some other batting tee out in the pen and a daily basis.
