The Reds are 5.5 games up in the wildcard. Sean Marshall will be back in 3 weeks. You don't mess with the development/usage of Cingrani, the 6th starter, just to feel good about the bullpen for the next 20 days, IMO. Other guys need to step up.

The "wildcard" isn't what it used to be. It's a one-game crapshoot. You really want to feel good about getting one of the two wildcard spots when we could win the division? And I would be willing to bet that the division will come down to just a game or three between the Reds and Cardinals. There are no games to be given away. Cingrani needs to be with the Reds. We need the best players in Cincinnati, not Louisville. Walt and Co. are making the correct decision here.

The Reds have four entirely home grown starters in their rotation right now. For some reason, I think the organization knows what they're doing when it comes to developing pitchers.

Three weeks, Doug? If he pulled a hamstring tomorrow and went on the DL for 3 weeks, would that be some huge setback in his development?

(I love when someone proves you wrong and you start bringing up irrelevant things like how many pitches a guy throws. Cingrani does a damn good job of getting people out. Also, just like Price did, he could briefly be a reliever at the MLB level.)

Having this argument is pretty pointless. Cingrani will be in the pen for a few weeks and then he'll go back to AAA and back to being a starter.

The Reds publicly came out and stated they wanted Cingrani down in the minors just a few weeks ago, to work on his offspeed pitches. His overwhelming use of his fastball tells us he needs to work on the other stuff. He isn't comparable to guys like Price or Wainwright who were used in the bullpen because those guys had developed their 2nd and 3rd pitches by then, so it didn't stunt them to pitch in the bullpen for a time. Depending on how long Cingrani spends in the bullpen, it could, because unlike those guys, he needs work on pitches beyond his fastball. Both were bad comparisons because two guys had a starters arsenal and were pitching out of the bullpen, while the other guy has his own team saying he doesn't have a starters arsenal that they trust in the Major Leagues right now.

No "hand-wringing" here, just some laughing at those who thinks this is an issue. One of the top-8 pitchers on the team in Cingrani is staying with the team and not pitching in meaningless games in Louisville. Oh, the horror! Plus, there's plenty of relievers who rely heavily on the fastball, don't have all that great secondary pitches ... and are successful. I think Cingrani can be successful in a RP role for the Reds this year and then return to his starting role next season. This is not all that complicated.

Things change. Kind of like when the Reds thought Chapman was going to be a starter and signed Broxton to be the closer. I honestly don't know how you can watch this team and not know that Cingrani is needed. He's not a luxury item, he's needed.
