Pass the Cards or creep within 2.5 games of the lead....as long as the Reds win tonight they win all the way around, no matter who wins Pirates-Cards.
Baseball is so much less stressful when you're just rooting for extra innings.
I guess the way I look at it, each good team has a couple of runs in them. Atlanta was very hot to start the season off and now they are hot as well. Head to head match ups get a lot of pub but unless there is a sweep there is only a little movement in the standings. In the Reds case I think the head to head are important, but no more important than every other game. These next 4 games against the Brewers count for exactly the same as 4 games played against the Cards or Pirates.
I'm not saying any one game is more important than another. I'm saying that the Central will be battling it out against each other while Atlanta faces a bunch of non-rivals. The fact that there is little movement in the standings in head-to-head matchups is precisely my point. With the schedule as it is, it's harder for any one NL Central team to run away with it.
With the exception of three games against San Diego, Atlanta's entire September is against their division-mates. I expect Washington to get a little hot, but I also expect the Marlins to cool off, so with that in mind, September is potentially a cakewalk for Atlanta. Barring their taking it a little easy (which they may well do), they have the potential to steamroll the division and stay way ahead in the standings.
There is no such thing as a pitching prospect.
Russell Martin with a solo dinger. Tied at 5.
I never realized how stress-free baseball is when you're just rooting for extra innings. Whoever mentioned that earlier was dead-on.

Meanwhile last year's World Series champs (San Francisco) are playing last year's NL team with the most wins (Washington) in a game that is almost meaningless. I don't think Washington has it in them to make a real Wild Card run.

The Pirates running up additional innings on their already taxed bullpen can't hurt. Nah.
