    6 man rotation ?

Why not try it out and give everyone a little rest at this time of the year ?

The cardinals do stuff like this .... batting the pitcher in the six hole .. etc.

    cueto
    arroyo
    bailey
    latos
    cingrani
    leake

    I personally think it's a terrible idea.

Taking every pitcher out of their routine just doesn't make sense.

Agreed...Make Cingrani the new Marshall outta the pen and let's proceed.

Routines are made to be adjusted. Everyone could get used to a new routine.

I also think it's a bad idea, but more because the Reds can't afford to take another arm away from the bullpen as it's already stretched thin as-is.

Changing the routine of 5 valuable assets, midway through the season and ask them to do something that they have never done is not meant to be adjusted.

Sure, if the idea actually made sense, and could be attempted during spring training, the routine could be set in a logical manner.

Doing it now? Illogical, dangerous, and even if it works, probably doesn't make the team better.

I'm not saying lets do it. But often these guys go on 5 days rest due to off days. So if you were in the midst of a 10 day or so stretch with no off days, it shouldn't hurt someone to give them an extra day...which would be 5 days rest.

Yeah there's really nothing dangerous about that. It would be far more dangerous to go to a 4-man rotation in the middle of the season than the other way around. Giving an extra day off is really not a bad idea.

But I'm against it, more because the bullpen absolutely can't afford being down another man.

Yeah, to be honest I didn't realize the OP was talking about a straight up 6 man rotation. I wouldn't be a fan of that.

But with Johnny a bit fragile right now and Cingrani bouncing around, I'd try to sneak a start in for Tony every now and then (assuming he is with the Reds...which I am not a fan of here today) or if the Bats rotation lined up just so.

This question has been kicked around for a long time. Personally, I don't think it would work.

Starters, especially veterans, are creatures of habit. Sure, occasionally someone will get pushed back a day, but to do it on a regular basis not only shortens the bullpen, but you're costing your horses ( # 1 and 2 starters) chances to pitch, which you don't want.

The Cards batted the pitcher 6th?

I doubt even Larussa did that after his worse bender.

    Re: 6 man rotation ?

I am leaning towards having the 2nd best record in MLB at the moment is good enough reason to leave well enough alone. Changing LFs, CHaging setup man due to injuries, etc is not crazy. A 6-man rotation while having the 2nd best record in MLB w/ your 5-man rotation is crazy. No offense to the OP! I will not even ask how many 6-man rotation teams have ever made the playoffs. Not asking, just sayin'...

As long as the 6th starter only pitches on alternate off days

We have 5 strong starters what would be the point to adding 1 more?

Dusty places a lot of value on the players' input before making a change like this. I doubt any of the 5 starters would be in favor of this. which makes it unlikely to happen.
