    BA 2013 Farm Rankings

    25. REDS

RHP Robert Stephenson (3 MWL) • OF Billy Hamilton (10 IL) • OF Jesse Winker (9 MWL) • OF Yorman Rodriguez (20 SL) • RHP Ben Lively (6 PIO)

Cincinnati 2013 first-rounder OF Phillip Ervin (2 PIO) finished just out of the picture here, and he’s also the only other Reds prospect to make a league top 20 list.

Can't take this stuff too seriously. Look back at the list in 4 years for some laughs.

True. Plus if the Reds can do well with their three top 75 picks in this years draft Od expect we'll see a strong rebound this time next year. None of the better prospects are graduating other than Hamilton. I will say that the lack of fruit from the 2012 draft - other than Winker - at this early stage is affecting the perception of the Reds system. Again it's early, but only one prospect better than a "C" grade out of four top 100 picks has hurt us. Travieso is looking like a big reach, Gelalich sucks, and Langfield has battled health issues.

Seriously the Yankees are 15? They don't have one prospect that I would trade any of the Reds top six for. Some will say Sanchez, but I am not that high on him either.
Hugs, smiling, and interactive Twitter accounts, don't mean winning baseball. Until this community understands that we are cursed to relive the madness.

I think that is a pretty fair rating. The Reds have promoted/traded away a bunch of prospects in the last couple of years. It's to be expected that their farm system is a bit shallow at the moment. It's actually a testament to the Reds success at promoting players to the majors.

This doesn't do much for me. Phillip Ervin doesn't even count in these rankings for some reason.

Agreed. Admittedly our prospects are somewhat top-heavy, but prospect rankings are just that: rankings of the prospective value of future MLB players. Time will tell.

    Re: BA 2013 Farm Rankings

I think the strength of the upper farm is the number of guys that may be able to step in for two or three starts should a member of the regular rotation go down. Other than Stephenson, there aren't really any top of the rotations studs, but there will be a lot of competition between guys like Holmberg, Corcino, Contreras, Rogers, Moscot, etc. (not to mention Wang).

We've had a guy or two like Richmond or Reynolds the past couple of years, but I believe they're developing a strong cadre of young starters that may have a 3rd, 4th or 5th starter ceiling. There are several decent bullpen options also.

On the other side of things (position players), there's Ervin, Barnhart and possibly YRod who could have an impact in the upper reaches - who may contribute in the next couple of seasons. After that there are a few AAAA types like HRod, Soto and Lutz, but not much more help. They really need a couple of solid young MI-types.

If I could pick three players to have breakout (or bounce-back) seasons for the sake of the franchise they would be:

    Starter: Daniel Corcino
    Reliever: Michael Lorenzen
    Position: Yorman Rodriguez

Really the 25th spot is okay if you read and understand how these rankings were made. Heavy, heavy emphasis on guys ready right now. Basically it just affirms what most think about the farm system anyway.
99% of all numbers only tell 33% of the story so when looking at the numbers remember that numbers is plural...
