In the old 2 division NL, Cincinnati was west and St. Louis and Chicago was east. Never figured that one out.

I believe this one was not so much geographical as balance and maintaining some rivalries.

New teams have to be added somewhere without doing an overhaul to the divisions would be my guess.

Right, IIRC the Braves were originally slated to be in the east as were the Cubs, but the Cards were in the west. At the time Gussie Busch had a loud voice in the ownership group and he whined loud about the Cubs and Cards being split up, so the deal was cut to swap the Braves (a relatively new ownership) and Cardinals

Also Phil Wrigley wasn't too happy about a lot of intra-divisional games (televised) that started at 9:00 p.m.
