My Semi-Live Blog Thread Thingy From Texas This Weekend

    Best RZ title post ever?

I struggle with that as you can see.

Anyway, first time in a long, long time I will be attending all the games of a Reds series and I am pretty excited. Thought it would be kind of fun to track my movements (or lack thereof) along with my game and periphery observations over the weekend.

A little background.... I live in OKC. Love, love my city. Was raised mostly in Tulsa, graduated high school in Houston, and returned to OK in college to attend OU--- been in OK ever since. Married, small business owner, 2 kids (4 and 18 months). Lifelong fan of Reds and Redskins (the most sharp among you have probably figured that out by now). Also an OKC Thunder fan/season ticket holder.

My relationship with Dallas and the DFW area is interesting. Loving the Redskins since I could breath, I naturally hate the Cowboys and decided I also hated the city of Dallas long before I ever even visited (I was born in NJ and my family is all from NY area). Little did I know as a kid that so much of my life would wind up running through Dallas.

To get from OK to Houston... Through Dallas
Biggest rival of my alma matter (Texas)..... Played annually in Dallas
Biggest rival of my football team..... In Dallas
Met many friends in college.... From Dallas
At least 50% of friends have settled.... In Dallas
Thunder developed a regional rivalry.....With Dallas

In many ways OKC is really just a small version of Dallas, as there are many similarities. But it's still just kind of fun for me to say I hate Dallas and all it represents. I've never had anything against the Rangers per se, but always rooted against them because.... Dallas. I figured there were likely lots of Cowboys and Longhorns fans rooting for the Rangers so it would be nice to see them fail. And of course the one time I am really rooting for a DFW team, they choke away the WS to St. Louis.

Didn't make it last time the Reds were here, so I'm making it happen this time. Going to each of the games with friends, one of whom is having a little cookout, etc Saturday afternoon. I have not only known these guys since college, but our friendships go back at least to high school and in one instance, elementary school. So I always have a blast down there even if I try not to

My Dad has a bazillion hotel points which he generously offered me. I accepted and declined invitations to stay with said friends. A quiet hotel room sans kiddos for two night sounds pretty damn delightful to be perfectly honest.

I am currently in sunny Ardmore, OK. It is 100 degrees, it is lunchtime and there is some mighty fine people watching outside of the Love's station. For those who don't know, there is very, very little between OKC metro and DFW. Very little. It is actually quite scenic.. Much more so than western OK and TX which is flat and barren. Lots of hills and small mountains/wilderness around here. It levels out once you cross into Texas and you can almost feel yourself get dumber when you cross that Red River. The WinStar Casino (huge, I think the biggest non-Vegas?) is your last gasp before entering TX... I'll be there shortly.

Meeting an old friend from high school (Houston) this evening. Should be fun. Even though its Hell.

In the car on my way to the game with my old HS buddy. Best thing about hanging with old friends is that it's like you are in a time lock--- nothing changes. Same jokes, same immaturity, etc.

Our senior year in HS, we were "aides" in the office at the same time for an hour each day. That was a glorious hour each day. Hilarity. There was a teacher named Mrs. Hernandez who was young, and hot. Or I should say, she was young and not ugly. And that was certainly good enough for us. Anyway, we would fight tooth and nail over who got to take messages to her classroom. We finally agreed to rotate.

We just had a good laugh reminiscing and saying "what in the world did we think was going to happen on those deliveries?"

In our seats; club level, second row, between third base and foul pole. The sun is currently on my face. It is like God has a magnifying glass and he is experimenting on me. Obscenely hot. Sporting my Votto shirt, sitting next to a dude wearing..... A Votto shirt. Ballpark is gorgeous; crowd is currently sparse--- undoubtedly people taking cover from sun.

Sun has dipped out of sight and on cue, the stands fill.

Bad luck for Cueto there; a dribbler and a broken bat single.... Amazing catch by Bruce.

After every batter Cueto walks around the mound and seems to be laboring. He always does that and it always make me nervous. His body language is weird.

That's a great big bowlful of awesomeness.

Yeah, it's been a real treat so far. We look awful all around. The terrible country walk up music doesn't help... Not does the fact that my Reds homie next to me in the Votto shirt is singing along with it.

Edskin - Can you confirm that Joey's head is still physically attached?

Well at least you are probably nice and comfortable in that 99-degree Texas evening heat...

I'm sweaty and frustrated. People can keep denying that our effort and energy isn't an issue, but in that case we just can catch the baseball anymore. Reds look beyond sluggish... Rangers making sharp plays in the field; Reds letting fairly routine balls get by them.

Re: My Semi-Live Blog Thread Thingy From Texas This Weekend

Wow, take the Cueto injury, the outcome, the recent play overall, and the fairly lethargic manner in which it took place and you can make an argument that I just attended the worst game of the year for the Reds.

That was a total dud. Left after the 8th so my buddy get home faster...the heat was oppressive even at 10:00 p.m. and the Reds looked really miserable from start to finish. The team is playing like garbage right now and I officially concerned that this might not just be a random bad streak. The fact that good teams continue to pound us into oblivion is a concern. Not panicking yet, but the red flags are raised.

Team really could use a win tomorrow... And so could I.

There's an old saying about how there is no such thing about a bad day at the ballpark... Well, if its 400 degrees and the team you care about is gettin shelled......

But in an effort to be mature (and believe me, it takes a LOT of effort) I can say I enjoyed my evening with my old friend. Lots of laughs and rehashing of old stories. Maybe that's what it's all about.... Even though its not
