Best RZ title post ever?
I struggle with that as you can see.
Anyway, first time in a long, long time I will be attending all the games of a Reds series and I am pretty excited. Thought it would be kind of fun to track my movements (or lack thereof) along with my game and periphery observations over the weekend.
A little background.... I live in OKC. Love, love my city. Was raised mostly in Tulsa, graduated high school in Houston, and returned to OK in college to attend OU--- been in OK ever since. Married, small business owner, 2 kids (4 and 18 months). Lifelong fan of Reds and Redskins (the most sharp among you have probably figured that out by now). Also an OKC Thunder fan/season ticket holder.
My relationship with Dallas and the DFW area is interesting. Loving the Redskins since I could breath, I naturally hate the Cowboys and decided I also hated the city of Dallas long before I ever even visited (I was born in NJ and my family is all from NY area). Little did I know as a kid that so much of my life would wind up running through Dallas.
To get from OK to Houston... Through Dallas
Biggest rival of my alma matter (Texas)..... Played annually in Dallas
Biggest rival of my football team..... In Dallas
Met many friends in college.... From Dallas
At least 50% of friends have settled.... In Dallas
Thunder developed a regional rivalry.....With Dallas
In many ways OKC is really just a small version of Dallas, as there are many similarities. But it's still just kind of fun for me to say I hate Dallas and all it represents. I've never had anything against the Rangers per se, but always rooted against them because.... Dallas. I figured there were likely lots of Cowboys and Longhorns fans rooting for the Rangers so it would be nice to see them fail. And of course the one time I am really rooting for a DFW team, they choke away the WS to St. Louis.
Didn't make it last time the Reds were here, so I'm making it happen this time. Going to each of the games with friends, one of whom is having a little cookout, etc Saturday afternoon. I have not only known these guys since college, but our friendships go back at least to high school and in one instance, elementary school. So I always have a blast down there even if I try not to
My Dad has a bazillion hotel points which he generously offered me. I accepted and declined invitations to stay with said friends. A quiet hotel room sans kiddos for two night sounds pretty damn delightful to be perfectly honest.
I am currently in sunny Ardmore, OK. It is 100 degrees, it is lunchtime and there is some mighty fine people watching outside of the Love's station. For those who don't know, there is very, very little between OKC metro and DFW. Very little. It is actually quite scenic.. Much more so than western OK and TX which is flat and barren. Lots of hills and small mountains/wilderness around here. It levels out once you cross into Texas and you can almost feel yourself get dumber when you cross that Red River. The WinStar Casino (huge, I think the biggest non-Vegas?) is your last gasp before entering TX... I'll be there shortly.
Meeting an old friend from high school (Houston) this evening. Should be fun. Even though its Hell.
