Krook Wonít Sign With Marlins

A postdraft physical exam of Marlins supplemental first-round pick Matt Krook raised issues that the two sides have been unable to resolve. As a result, sources familiar with the negotiations say that Krook will decline the opportunity to turn pro and instead will attend the University of Oregon in the fall.

Per MLB rules, Krook would become a free agent and Miami would lose its compensation pick for not signing him (No. 36 in the 2014 draft) if the club didnít offer him at least 40 percent of the assigned value for his selection. The allotment for the No. 35 choice is $1,587,700. Sources said the Marlins will meet the 40 percent threshhold ($635,080) to recoup the draft pick.
