what are your thoughts on Great American Ballpark?

What are your thoughts on Great American Ballpark and what they've done to that area? Parking, food areas, etc. How does it compare to other baseball ballparks?

Personally, I love the place. And let me tell you, after visiting the dump known as the Oakland Coliseum, GAB looks even better in comparison.

If you have a burning desire to spend a few hours in a dirty, smelly, prison-looking concrete slab, then go to the Coliseum.

Re: what are your thoughts on Great American Ballpark?

The park is adequate, the area has vastly improved with the banks project finally developing. Parking isn't too horrible, it improves vastly if you're willing to walk some, or pay a small bus fare. I don't know about the food, because I can buy half the same stuff on the outside on the way for at least half the price, and the other stuff is even more expensive. That's true of all the parks.

As for the other parks I've been to:
Philadelphia- Park is nice, fun angles. Parking is way more abundant than GABP, because the stadium sits in a sea of parking lots. There is literally nothing else to do in the area.
Washington- I like this park, very fan friendly field plays about the same as GABP. Parking seems similar to GABP as well. Some close expensive lots, can find a reasonable lot if you're willing to walk. Traffic can really suck, but there's the metro right to a block away from the stadium that we usually take.
Baltimore- Beautiful stadium, also very friendly confines. Parking can be hit or miss because of all the other things around, and I've yet to find the "cheap" lot that I'd be willing to park in. There is a light rail line to just outside the stadium as well.

The other stadiums I've been to have either been replaced or it's been too long since I've been to really give up to date information, but I'll rank all of them for how much I enjoy/enjoyed the ballpark expirience:

    1. Camden Yard- closest now, beautiful park, fan friendly, good for visiting fans (at least when they weren't good! Didn't go last season or this one yet). Only negative is parking in downtown Baltimore.
    2. Yankee Stadium (old)- Just amazing going to this park, expensive, but was definitely worth the trip.
    3. GABP- Can't beat being amongst the home crowd, no matter the stadium.
    4. Nationals Park- Another good place to see the game as a visiting fan, so much to do and see even if the game isn't worth watching. It's too bad this one is better located to get some spectacular city views. This would be above GABP if it weren't for the homerism.
    5. Citizen's Bank Park- Nice park, surrounding area needs work.
    6. Minute Maid Park- I like the retractable roof and the hill in center adds to the expirience. I hate Houston.
    7. Comerica Park- Really nice park, really crummy city.
    8. Progressive Field- It's average, and it's in Cleveland.
    9. Cinergy/Riverfront- Pretty meh, nothing special other than it was my first and it was the Reds
    10. Astrodome- Saw one of the final games played there, so that added to the expirience. However, watched the Astros win and scoreboard watched the Reds lose in Milwaukee to make the magic #1 for the Astros to clince the division (which they'd do the next day).
    11. 3 Rivers Stadium- cookie cutter, it wasn't in Philadelphia.
    12. Veteran's Stadium- Cookie cutter, it was.
    Is it "next season" yet?

I feel like GABP is improving with age. It seems that more things have been added to the park since its opening, and it makes for a very fan friendly experience. As already mentioned, the Banks have really livened up the atmosphere around the stadium. I have been to a handful of different stadiums and GABP holds its own.

Re: what are your thoughts on Great American Ballpark?

Ranking the ones I've been to thus far....

    Ballpark itself, not the area

    1. Fenway Park - Old and new mixed so well together. All they've done out in right field is awesome as a mix of new stuff. This place is wonderful.
    2. Tiger Stadium - Loved this park. Lots of history and lots of modern stuff too. Food was pretty generic, but ok. Don't like the style of the statues though, weird 'actiony' stuff.
    3. GABP - Improves every year. The park does pay homage to the past and is modern. Food was awful the first few years but now they have the smokehouse with custom dishes based on opponent and a Food Network stand that's pretty good.
    4. Nationals Park- Very cool all around. Huge scoreboard is really neat, good sightlines, good stuff.
    5. Miller Park - Really cool historic stuff there, Hank Aaron statue, Braves stuffs, Spahn, lots of fun baseball things for folks like us.
    6. Dodger Stadium - It's Dodger stadium. I think the mystique is probably better than the reality, but I enjoyed it.
    7. Progressive/Jacobs - A bit dull in here, nothing amazing, comfortable. Good to watch a game as far as sight lines.
    8. Wrigley - This is not Cubs hate speaking here. I have a lot in common with Chicago sports fans, so I've softened my disdain over the years, but other than the fact its Wrigley field, its pretty boring in there.

Area around park - Bars, things to do, etc
    1. Fenway -Yawkey Way. Bars galore. Downtown Boston. Wow.
    2. GABP - So much better today than in '03. Lager House, Tin Roof, WG, places to eat. Just need to add some shopping. Hall of Fame is the best.
    3. Wrigley - Wrigleyville is full of drunks. I like drunks when they aren't buttholes.
    4. Progressive - Casino not too far away, a few places to eat, bars, etc.
    5. Nationals Park - Right on the metro line, a few cool places to eat. Loved my trip here, but the area around the park wasn't fantastic.
    6. Tiger Stadium - It's Detroit. I feared for my life as I left. That's not hyperbole.
    7. Miller Park - Its a parking lot, but lots of friendly tailgaters.
    8. Dodger Stadium - Its a parking lots with a view and no tailgaters.

Championships for MY teams in my lifetime:
    Cincinnati Reds - 75, 76, 90
    Chicago Blackhawks - 10, 13, 15
    University of Kentucky - 78, 96, 98, 12
    Chicago Bulls - 91, 92, 93, 96, 97, 98

Here @ GABP now... Some bunting is up for the holiday week-weekend and new-fangled smoke-eaters on Crosley Terrace.Attachment 6590Attachment 6591

Wish there were a game today here... Some clouds but comfortable low 80s with a nice breeze. Lots of folks on the Banks.

I've seen a number of them, mostly NL, but IMO there is nothing that compares to the new Yankee Stadium. Place is just spectacular.

I like GABP, but I went to AT&T Park last year when the Reds were there. That way by far and away the best park/setting I've ever seen. I've been to GABP, AT&T, Wrigley, The Trop, Jacobs Field, Comerica, Busch II, and countless minor league parks.

A lot of folks expressed their opinions on this earlier thread, just in case you didn't see it.

I like it a lot. Easy to get in and out of. Lots of room to move around. Attractive sight lines inside. Tremendous gift shop and Reds Hall of Fame. Only thing I don't care for is the look from the outside. Wish it was a little more attractive, but it beats the old cement bowl.

I wish they had a brick exterior like other stadiums.

I am not fond of the all red seats for some reason. I'm not sure why or what color they should of gone with instead.

The Reds HOF is top notch!!

The stadium has gotten better with time and now that finally the city has put restaurants and bars where the mudhole was makes the whole stadium experience a lot better.

GABP is a good, not great, ballpark. But "The Banks" has put it over-the-top as far as a good overall area to see a game and hang out before/afterwward. They could not have done a better job with The Banks project (other than build it a few years earlier).

I've seen people mention this a few times and talk about it on WLW. What does it refer to? I'm aware of the new development across from the HoF area, but is that it, or is there some new stuff near the stadium now?
