Why is C Heisey DHing while Choo plays C-field? Is Heisey not well?
Why is C Heisey DHing while Choo plays C-field? Is Heisey not well?
HUBBA A man who knows everything, just can't remember it all at one time.
Dusty said way back during spring training that Choo was the starting CF and Heisey's best position is LF and would back up Choo in CF. Also, Heisey has been on the DL for two months with a bad hammy and it wouldn't be good to put him out there in CF right away.

Bottom line is Choo should not be starting against a LH starting pitcher. No way and no how at this point. His feelings can take a backseat to the good of the team. .311/.179/.490 against LH pitching this season. And we all know, while it is not bad, that his defense is not a good enough reason to offset those pitcher-like batting stats against LH pitchers.
No reason. If you have one, other than Dusty does not want to upset him or Dusty loves a vet CF, then let me know. Because his offense against LH pitching is atrocious at this point. Of course month-to-month this year against all pitching (OPS) has taken the direction of an airplane that is out of fuel: April = 1.031 ; May = .880 ; June = .711. No one expects him to OPS 1.031 every month, but .711 is getting worrisome. .490 (against LH) is beyond reason to sit him against a LH.

How can you have watched the Reds the past 3 years and think Heisey is more than 80% with his speed. He does not have his burst at all. I wouldn't do much more than PH Heisey until he gets his burst back....and I might be the biggest Heisey fan on here.
Choo has played CF better than Votto has played 1st

In a perfect world Choo would be platooned. But the Reds don't anyone viable enought to platoon with him. Heisey has had multiple chances and can't get it done. Platooning with him would be no benefit at all. The Reds have no other alternatives.

Than WTH is Heisey on this roster? Not directed at you, cumberlandreds. I sure as heck will bet money that Heisey can outperform the offensive numbers shown by Choo against LH pitchers (see next paragraph).
We all know that Heisey was hurt and had a short sample. We all know that Heisey, as an everyday starter, does not seem to cut it. But I am asking to play him in CF against LH starters. .325/.400/.725 against LH this year. Choo cannot use the OBP argument against Heisey.
Unless we want to argue defense is the reason for Choo starting against a LH, there is no argument. And I highly doubt that any of us want to side with Choo on defense against any average defensive ML outfielder in CF.
Three months and a .490 OPS. Enough is enough. It may not get better w/ someone else, but it sure as heck ain't getting any worse lol... unless we see a bullpen pitcher in CF. Heisey, Robinson... vs. .490? Not a great choice, but .490 is awful.

We don't all know that because I think his defense flat out sucks in center. Atrocious. Among the worst, if not the worst of all starting center fielders. Not really his fault, because he has no business being in center. But it is what it is and he stinks out there.

...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

Here's the list of CF with a -3.0 UZR or better and at least a .320 wOBA:
Carlos Gomez
Gerardo Parra
Andrew McCutchen
Brett Gardner
Cobly Rasmus
Jacoby Elsburt
Mike Trout
Dexter Fowler
Coco Crisp
Now, I realize everybody is skeptical about UZR, but Choo and his -9 runs on defense still is tied for 7th most WAR among CF.
I'd be cool moving him to LF, but if the question is simply adding production in the OF, I'm just not convinced there are options out there that are notable upgrades over what we currently have.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.
