If you or Hal want to be a master of panic and act like the Reds were playing over their heads in April and May and June was a better indicator of their talent level, go for it. You're wrong, but go for it.
They're battling injuries and they went out West and played some good teams and struggled. With all that being said, they're still 4.5 games up on a playoff spot. It's a loooong season. There will be more peaks and more valley's. It's like Plus Plus said, this isn't football. You'd swear it was the first season Reds fans have watched a baseball season before. There's absolutely no reason to panic.

I have always enjoyed his articles whether I agreed with them or not.
"Since I've been with the Reds in 1989, we've never had a farm system this loaded," Bowden said. "If we were the New York Yankees and had unlimited dollars, we could have traded for Colon, (Jeff) Weaver, Rolen, (Cliff) Floyd, (Kenny) Rogers and Finley and gotten them all -- and still held onto our top five prospects. That's an amazing statement."
It doesn't have to do with anything (the back-to-the-batter delivery thing is even a stretch...) and seems very self-serving.
And when you are in the baseball writers hall of fame you shouldn't be writing articles that get published where you come across like a frustrated fan. Those articles are found for free on the internet on Bleacher Report or blogs or facebook statuses.
I think we're talking semantics here in that I think the Reds are a good team, I just wouldn't use the word "very" alongside that....sort of like using a B to grade them instead of an A. And I've felt all along that the Ludwick injury was troubling and the most significant. The difference in the order with and without him is huge on a number of fronts.

If we can just get into the playoffs and if we can get to that point relatively healthy, then I'm willing to roll the dice.
Baseball is really, really hard. It's a game where the worse team wins often enough that small stretches don't give you any real information.

I guess, in fairness, Hal was writing to his audience. If that is what his paper wants, its his reputation.
Personally, I'd rather not write than to write for that audience, or try to educate my audience so they are no longer that audience.
