I don't know if I've ever heard of an umpire being fired.
Hopefully its the end of the Runge umpiring dynasty.

I hope it's actually a harmful drug he got fired for and nothing harmless like maryjane. We're cool with people getting s-faced drunk, but a little weed is illegal? OK. This "prohibition" won't last much longer in this country. The wheels are very much in motion.
That said, if this dude was doing heroin or something, I'm glad he got canned. But if it was for weed, that's weak. Alcohol is much-more harmful to your body than marijuana and this is not even debatable. (Ask any doctor.)

I agree, if this is for him testing positive for marijuana it's ridiculous.
Sponsors advertise booze and beer the entire game, which lots of kids watch. Alcohol is incredibly dangerous. Killed my dad at 58 who was a daily drinker. His liver failed due to cirrhosis.
Marijuana has never killed anyone, and if it's made legal, it would be harder for kids and teens to get. As it is now, anybody can buy it if you know the right people. If it's legal, you need to be 21 with I.D.
Not to mention the reduction in street crime by taking it off the black market. It's working out pretty well in Colorado.

I'm surprised no one noticed that he was using before. I mean he went his entire career without umping a no hitter, than is behind the plate for two of them in 2012. Definitely raises the suspicion of PED's.

The article did say he had knee surgery last August and had not worked a game since. You do wonder if maybe it was PEDS? Crazier things have happened.

MLB took the opportunity to cull out a few bad umpires. Really dumb move by their union. A few of them like Gregg became almost destitute because they had no income and couldn't really get another decent job. In one way I felt bad for them but in another I didn't. They threw away a good paying job for not much of a reason.
