A Couple Names That Are Out There...

Going to throw out some names of recently released players.. Shed your thoughts of the idea.

    Carlos Pena:

Carlos Pena was released by the Astros today.. Which got me thinking. Why not sign him as a bench bat. It's essentially minimum salary at a prorated amount for the remainder of the season. He would definately provide power that Hannahan, Izturis, Corky, or a pitcher could provide.. He's definately not a guy who hits for average but does get on base at a okay rate. Like I said, would be there merely to bolster the bench and nothing more.

    Kelly Shoppach:

A catcher who could provide a little more stability then Corky.. Without essentially knowing how long Hanigan is going to be out at least this would provide you a little depth. His best season was in 2008 w/ the Indians but would definately be an upgrade over Mes current backup. Also the Cards are essentially interested and you know as soon as he puts on the Cardinal uniform he becomes the best signing known to man and he starts doing magic tricks at the plate because he's so amazing.

I don't know the details, but neither of those players would bother me if the Reds signed them. They do need bench power and they definitely need a better third catcher. Shoppach is a name that has been connected to the Reds in the past, actually, so you might even prove clairvoyant on that count.

RE.. Totally agree. This team needs to bolster a need and I get not wanting to deal prospects for players.. Seems like a lot of teams where asking for the price of a Rolls Royce for essentially a Camry at the deadline and I don't blame them for not overspending.. Especially on yet another bullpen arm. Are they names thats going to bring people to the ticket window? No.. But they are somewhat better options then are currently in place.

On the cheap, neither would be a bad addition.
Rounding third and heading for home...

Pena's three true outcomes style of play would probably fit right in, though unfortunately he pretty much can only play 1B.

The real Razor Shines isn't playing anywhere right now. He may be old and out of shape but even in his prime he wasn't very good.

He has somehow been worse than Hannahan this year.

I thought Shoppach was already working on a deal with the Cardinals anyway.

I don't think Pena has anything left, does he? Seems to be cooked, with back-to-back seasons of sub .700 OPS. And his K's are rising, which probably means his bat is slow. I don't see the spot he would take.

Last I heard he was the Mets first or third base coach, I wonder if he still has the juice curl?
When I see the 2016 Reds, I see a 100 loss team and no direction.
