Based on his contract the Reds are paying him to be a 2.5 WAR player or so over the life of his contract. As per any LTC with a guy in his 30's you hope to get more value out of the first few years of the deal, because the last couple years will probably play out in the player's favor. Phillips was at 3.7 last year and is just about on the same pace this year...outproducing his contract so far.

When it is all said and done, I expect the Reds to come out slightly favorably on the contract, though the last few years might not look great.

When there's little available, you aren't going to get a "sure thing".

I am positive that Robinson can't supply that bat.

His range (at least to the eye of someone who has seen 20 Royals games in person this year) is minimal in RF compared to just a couple years ago. He is Drew Stubbs minus SPEED and DEFENSE, absolutely helpless at the plate unless a guy grooves one. He has the old top of helmet to shoelace strike zone.

So, you're saying that you'd like him on the Reds?

I'm pretty indifferent/leaning towards "no" on this one. Obviously his best years are behind him, I can't stand to watch him at the plate, and even though I can see how he'd be an upgrade over DRob, it's hard to believe another upgrade can't be found.

What I don't like is the talk about Francoeur being a "jolt to the clubhouse" (C. Trent has made this point twice now.) If they want to improve the clubhouse atmosphere pay Scott Rolen to just hang around, chat it up, and play some video games with them.

    Re: Francoeur to Reds?

    Pros
He was once a bright shiny prospect
He was pretty good from 2005 to 2007, if you put aside OBP
He supposed to be one of the best, nicest guys in baseball
He has a cannon for an arm
He's a handsome guy and can grow a good playoff beard

    Cons
    He is terrible

    It's close.
"Since I've been with the Reds in 1989, we've never had a farm system this loaded," Bowden said. "If we were the New York Yankees and had unlimited dollars, we could have traded for Colon, (Jeff) Weaver, Rolen, (Cliff) Floyd, (Kenny) Rogers and Finley and gotten them all -- and still held onto our top five prospects. That's an amazing statement."

Get Frenchy in time for the braves series so he can terrorize his old team. Pair him with Jacoby and the Reds will have an all-star RF.

Honestly, I would take a flier on him. Paul's injury is probably worse than what the Reds are saying or have diagnosed. Heisey's hammy is questionable and DRob is DRob.

Yep.. I agree with the above.

Francoeur is not a good player, but given how thin the Reds are in the OF, he's worth picking up as a bat off the bench. And you're right, if Paul's injury is serious, we need to get SOMEONE .. Francour might be better than DRob.. worst case, they are close. If nothing else, Francour is a stopgap until something better is found.
Thank you Walt and Bob for going for it in 2010-2014!

I cannot think of a worse target than Frenchie. If Walt is looking for a cheap defensive OF upgrade I'd rather him see what it takes to get Stubbs back from Cleveland, and that's saying a lot.

Hopefully this is just Rosenthal fishing for page views.
