Joey Votto is a Good Dude

    http://www.thebiglead.com/index.php/...e-passed-away/

I know the contract the Reds gave Joey Votto was insane and will probably look bad maybe even really bad by the time it ends but I couldn't be more happy to say that Joey Votto plays for my favorite team. I'm sure this goes on with a lot of guys on a lot of teams and doesn't get attention. Regardless props to Joey.

Very cool. And it's especially nice that this story didn't come from Votto or the Reds, but from the family.

Fretting about giving out an enormous contract to one of the five best hitters in baseball is dead end thinking. The organization could afford to do it, and they did it. Everything else is hand-wringing. Enjoy it.

I usually don't have a favorite player - i've been a Reds fan for life and a favorite player just seems so gauche.....but Votto...I freakin love that man. I've never seen a guy handle pitchers like he does - how he chokes up. How he struggled with the toss to first base and then got better at it by running toward his target. How he learned to slide on a different leg. How he sometimes take chances -that don't work out (i'm cool with that- even Pete Rose got thrown out once in a great while tryin to stretch a hit).

The weird style of hitting - the choking up on the bat to get leverage.

How he's cool in the dugout and is self deprecating with humor. How he takes responsibility for things he does wrong.

How he handles the media - the guy has the tao. He's my favorite player.

    Absolutely awesome.
"I tried to play golf, but I found out I wasn't very good." -Joey Votto on his offseason hobby search

An MLB.com reporter asked what one thing Votto couldn’t do. “I can’t skate or play hockey,” Votto said. “Well, I can skate ... but I can’t stop.”

I thought the same thing. If Joey does more of these kinds of things, he doesn't publicize them, which is refreshing.

He did not look like a guy with only 2 days left.

The game? July 2nd, last Tuesday. The game that Homer Bailey threw his 2nd no-hitter in ten months. It just so happened that Jeff Crews was also in attendance for the first no hitter as well, in Pittsburgh the previous year, for his anniversary.
    whoa, that is crazy.

Further evidence of him being a good dude, he can laugh at himself:

Votto was not asked to be in Home Run Derby. "Why would I be? I barely hit balls out of the park...and sometimes they get caught."

Wonder if Joey's twin little brothers (around 14 or so I think, play baseball?)

Such a wonderful story. Votto is my favorite Red because of things like this that complement his play.

    Also, welcome back FCB!

It's nice to know that my favorite current Red can hit homeruns off the field too. He's a genuine class act and proves it more and more every day.

    Welcome back, FCB!
