If it prevents him from ripping up his knee I have no problem with it, this is a game not a movie... I'm sure he'd do it if the game depended on it.

only 19 Reds have had season's with a .400 OB% and a slg% of .500, three of them are Votto, he'll do it again this year, let's at least acknowledge that he provides something very few players have for the Reds.

RBIs? Only nine of them had more than 100 and Votto has two of those seasons

I'm talking this year! I said he is one of the best hitters in all of baseball.
Sliding correctly is not going to rip your knee up, and how do you know when "the game depends on it"?

I do hope the SS coming across never decides to plunk him high as he's in the way when he doesn't slide.

    What about hits with RISP?
I guess that doesn't matter either because it could result in a "worthless" RBI.
RBI in themselves aren't worthless at all. They are, however, a byproduct. Too many outside factors go into it on the player level.

I'm a transplant to Cincinnati, so I can't pretend to understand the culture like a native. So can someone please explain the Cincinnati tendency to rip on our best player?

It's the RBI (Really Bogus Indicator) The Reds have had 599 players get 400 AB's in a season and only 51 have had 100 RBI's (a whole 8.5%)

    It clouds peoples thinking

    Re: 7/11/13 Reds at Braves

They put the player on a pedestal and when he fails to singlehandedly overcome every team disappointment or weakness, they are royally betrayed and deeply hurt, and they begin destroying. Which is ironic considering one of their main defenses is "I guess Joey Votto is God and untouchable since we aren't allowed to criticize his mistakes!"

Ignorance of a vocal minority. Plain and simple.

No it's the very knowledgeable minority that can see that a certain player is falling short in some aspects of their game.

Really reds1869, you think only Cincy fans criticize their "Superstar" players... Now that's pretty funny.

Hey Falcon, show me where you raved on Votto being the best in baseball last season in terms of moving runners along, and I just might give you an ounce of credibility.

Well, I've lived in another major league city and spent extended spells in several others. They didn't have the same tendency we have here to bash their stars. They criticized players, yes; but not the way we do here. One of the cities I'm referring to is Boston, certainly not a place known for being easy on players.

I know. But when you come in here chirping about Votto only during the tough times, it shows your true colors. Jumping on a guy when he is "down".

The fact that apparently you were nowhere to be found on this issue last year (if so please show me) is critical to put your take in perspective.
