I think that gun has to be fast. I don't remember ever seeing so many guys make any kind of contact when Chapman is at 100+.

I think the gun was 2-3MPH fast for the same reason.

They do it when the run is meaningless.

    It never matters.

Can you give an example when they'll allowed the tying run to get on base in the last inning?

Gained ground on the Nats, 5 up on the wild card now.

Dodgers (also 5 behind, down 2-0).

When did RI become so in vogue anyways? It used to be called a SB if you stole it. If it means a run scored or a tying runner in Scoring position....then it is a stolen base to me, if the other team is indifferent to it, that is there problem.

Because they don't want to give a stolen base in any situation in which the stolen base does not increase your chance of winning one iota, and the defence understands it.

If it's the tying run, they don't call "fielder's indifference".

The 2nd Atlanta run was meaningless. The last Atlanta baserunner was meaningless.

I'm torn, the run is meaningless. But what about the one iota possibility that giving up the force at 2nd will matter.

I'd just call all things even, and call them all stolen bases and assume it all evens out in the end.

If it didn't matter why would guys even bother stealing?

If the advantage of taking the given base increases you chances of winning by X %, your chance of winning by having the pitcher being concerned about the baserunner is greater than that.

The pitcher ignores the baserunner as it increases his chance of winning the game.

The runner takes the free because it increases his chance of winning.

If the runner saw that the pitcher was trying to prevent him from stealing, he'd never try, because that would decrease his chances. Much better to have the pitcher concerned.

That goes into the thinking. But most teams value playing the defenders where they want them, over trying to stop the stolen base. Defending against the stolen base means 3/4 of the infield is set up differently.

Management certainly likes things the way they are in regards to DI. A player going into contract negotiations with 19 steals rather than 20 makes a difference monetarily.
