They wanted it more than the other team/they just didn't want it enough.

Hate that one. As if his feeling bad excuses the failure to do his job.

Sorry to be the language arts teacher here. While I'll give that the last one is a cliche, it is also an axiom (admittedly stating the obvious), the other two are truths or axioms, not cliches.

Ha! Thanks for the corrections. Admittedly, the word "cliche" itself has become rather watered down in this thread to mean something more like "well-known saying." So I am as guilty as the next -- though is it not true that an axiom can become a cliche if it is overused? To my mind, the words can be roughly synonymous, depending on usage.

I don't think a cliche has to do with overuse per se, though many end up that way. I've always thought of a cliche as something that is not descriptive but is rather empty upon analysis. "Kicks and deals," while not literal, is descriptive; it conjures up something that is actually happening. Whereas "he plays the game the right way" is the quintessential cliche to me: what does that mean? What's the right way? The right way according to whom? It's hollow analysis that illuminates nothing to the listener.

I remember being taught what a cliche is by my (excellent) junior high language arts teacher who used the example "She was always there for me." She said that the phrase relied on an existing expression that said nothing about that particular relationship. To be a good writer you would have to expound on that: how was she there for you? what did she do? when was she there for you? etc.

More of an evaluation than a cliche IMO. Cliches aren't necessarily something negative that you disagree with. See vaticanplum's excellent analysis above. :-)

The ball is round, the bat is round. All you have to do is hit it square!
