Only Sale did more than anyone else, but in a game without any exceptional performance, why not? I can assure you that that's who the players on both teams would have voted for.

There was speculation that the NL pitcher (I think it was Chan Ho Park) grooved one to Ripken so he could go long.

Correct. Ever watched a home run derby. Guys are getting grooved much less pitches and still don't hit a home run every time.
The award is so irrelevant that I couldn't care less who it is given to or why. That it was used as a way to give Mo' a memorable send off is just fine with me.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.
I really don't have a problem with Rivera getting the ASMVP award at all. The game itself was rather dull and lacked a true standout performance by anyone. However, out of all the pitchers who performed so well, Mo is the only one that's been doing it for 20 years in a legendary career. That counts for something and sets him apart from the rest of the pack.
