How many people mention him when they talk about the greatest hitters of the 90s? Some do. But not enough. I think the fact that he was a DH really hindered how people think of him as a hitter. Not everyone feels this way, but I think he should be in the HOF. From 1995-2000 his OPS was as follows: 1.107, 1.059, 1.009, .993, 1.001, 1.002.

Griffey got most of the highlights on Sportscenter, but is it possible Martinez was actually the better hitter at his peak?

Any player from the last 20 years is somebody that I did get to see play in his prime.
I would be more interested in seeing play today's game in his prime level:
    1. Babe Ruth
    2. Ted Williams
    3. Mickey Mantle or Willie Mays or Josh Gibson or Walter Johnson or Sandy Koufax or Satchel Paige or Lefty Grove.......
"Hey...Dad. Wanna Have A Catch?" Kevin Costner in "Field Of Dreams."

But I've watched all the great players over the past 20 years.

    This.

Only the fact that he was injured keeps me from pointing to Bo Jackson as proof of Extra Terrestrial life on this planet.

Damn. Yeah, he'd my number one guy I'd want to see. Very rarely will a player choke up and slap themselves a base hit these days. It's one of the very few things you learn to do when you start facing live pitching as a kid. It's as fundamental as laying off a ball that's outside, but pros just don't want to do it anymore.

Most guys numbers would fall off transferring from a past era to this one. If I had to bet on which player would have the most successful transition and put up similar stats, it'd be Carew.
