Re: BP on Votto's contract and hard feelings over his...

A player who is making millions should never, ever mention money, other than to go to the thread on cliches and say how blessed they have been and feel lucky to be getting paid so much to play a game.

Nothing else will ever resonate with fans and sounds like complaining, which is what BP is doing. And instead of just complaining about his own contract, or comparing his contract with other 2B in the league, he dragged his teammate into it, who happens to be one of the best ballplayers in the league.

Maybe this is what Dusty was alluding to last week when he mentioned he was looking for leaders to step up.

Re: Phillips: Votto contract a slap in the face

Cincinnati Magazine has had a couple articles this year that don't shine too brightly on the Reds (it's not their job to do so, so I'm not accusing). Although this may just be a paragraph. I didn't think the Chapman article made him very endearing.

“Joey doesn’t really have a personality. He just goes out there and plays. He’s just Joey, you know what I mean?” says Phillips. “Plain Jane Joey. I hit the ball, I catch the ball, and I make money—that’s Joey. But I bring excitement to the game. I make it interesting. And my teammates love that.”
Another comment from the same article. Safe to say that BP is jealous that he's not always the center of attention?

Re: Brandon Phillips, our Allstar brat?

    On the Cardinals:
So why have Phillips’s feelings changed? What about him has softened when it comes to the Cards? “The guy that was doing all the crap isn’t there anymore—and I mean the manager,” Phillips says, unable to leave any ambiguity about his feelings for the now-retired Cardinals manager Tony La Russa. “But you gotta respect them. The Cardinals are one of those organizations that are always winners.”

Nevertheless, as Phillips continues—heaping more and more praise on the pile, coming clean with his admiration for the ball club—his tone changes just slightly. He’s becoming more animated, gesturing with his hands, talking faster. It’s as if all of these feelings are rushing back to him.

“They’re better than us. They have so much success, and you always hate the best,” he says, sitting forward. “So I respect the organization, I respect their players, I respect the way they play...but if you wanna say I still hate them?”

He lifts his glass to take a drink before smirking.

    “Yeah, I do.”

Re: Phillips: Votto contract a slap in the face

Sure Brandon, complaining that the team signed it's franchise player while you only got 5 years and $60 Million while on the wrong side of 30 makes a ton of sense. I love watching him play 2B and he's a good player and Reds HOF, but he's 32 and my guess is the last 3 years of his deal will look pretty bad.

For all the love Phillips is getting for his RBI, this year so far is Phillips lowest OPS season since the Reds acquired him. His speed has been gone for a couple years now. I wonder if he's already in his decline.
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!

“For [Castellini] to sign somebody for $200 million, there must be a new vegetable or fruit coming out that we don’t know about. For him to do something like that and tell me they didn’t have any more money, that’s a lie. But what can I do? I just feel like it was a slap in my face.”
Gotta admit, that made me laugh.

For someone who thinks he is so great he really does focus on other people a lot. What someone else gets has nothing to do with you. If he had a better option out there he would've taken it.

This reminds me of a talk given by Herman Edwards to the new NFL draftee's. In it he said "Don't press send" When you press send you can't delete it, you have to own it, its permanent. Phillips may have been "unhappy" with his contract but you don't make that public to your fans. You don't put something in writing criticizing your organization and teammates because you not paid like one of the best players in all of baseball.

Phillips has always talked about how he wants to be a leader. Leaders don't do this.

There's more to it than is quoted here. Phillips takes the edge off with stuff he says later. Read the full article to get the full picture.

Absolutely crazy that anyone could consider a contract that will set him -- and his family -- for life a "slap in the face."

Read the full article to get the full picture. People will excerpt certain quotes for maximum effect -- and choose not to include other statements which soften that effect.

glib, but really was a shot at the owner of the team, the guy who forked over all the $ BP is complaining about. Not very gracious.

This is the list BP should be comparing himself to:

from Cots, and a better question for BP to be asking is how Dan Uggla got all that money

    10. Robinson Cano, $7,500,000 (2008-11)
    11. Brian Roberts, $7,150,000 (2008-09)
    12. Dustin Pedroia, $6,750,000 (2009-14)
    . . . Brandon Phillips, $6,750,000 (2008-11)

Comments like these will make it incredibly difficult to relate to fans who will find it incredibly difficult to relate to someone that thinks a $72.5 million contract is a "slap in the face."
