Probably because he's been blessed with great talent? I would say Walt Jocketty is the reason for the turn around. After all, he's the one who went out and acquired key players (Latos, Chapman, Rolen, Choo) to go along with the existing talent (Cueto, Bailey, Votto, Bruce, Phillips).
    I miss Adam Dunn.

Players get credit when they win, GM gets credit for acquiring good players, whenever the Reds lose it's Dusty's fault.

I could care less what his lifetime OPS, his last 2 seasons have been horrendous.

Dusty sure is a lucky guy!!

He's managed three clubs and the only success he has is because he's had good players (well yeah that helps)but otherwise he's one lucky guy to have done this with two teams.

1993 Giants 103 wins, most by Giants since 1962

2012 Reds 97 wins, most by Reds since 1976

Lucky for him to have been there each time.

    1) research suggests that optimizing lineups can make a 1 to 2 game difference in the standings at the end of the year.

    2) research also suggests that using your best RP in a flexible role is the best strategy.

Those of us who advocate for these two arguments just want the Reds to maximize their chances at winning. We get frustrated when they don't.

If you're going to rip on Dusty for using Chapman as the closer and not at any point that is the "highest leverage situation", you're going to literally be unhappy with every manager in the history of ever.

And the first manager who manages to both of those specifications will be the first. Some may use the computer to compare matchups etc but I don't know of any who set their daily lineup order using optimization simulations. Once in a blue moon a manager may use his closer out of the traditional role but it is rare. So, while we bash Dusty, remind ourselves we are bashing everyone else who manages, too.

Except for Dusty is one of the more flagrant offenders on both counts, and one of the more strident spokesmen for this (lack of) strategy. That's why he's a lightning rod for criticism.

And let's stop calling it "bashing", can we? The critiques posed here and elsewhere on RZ are most often more intelligent than that.

When critiques continue on the exact same line ad nauseum...they go from intelligent reasoning to parrot like bashing, imo.

    4 out saves do happen.

I'm kind of tired of this argument from the standpoint that this research is wholly and utterly based on theory. Because we have never been able to isolate the theory and test it specifically, the research is speculative only. It depends on perfect factors going correctly.

When the "optimization" "suggests" 1-2 games in the standings at most, what you're more than likely looking at is a negligible difference based on an unproven and untested theory.

I'm all for doing everything you can to win the most games. But when we're talking about a max of 1-2 wins if everything is perfectly optimized with perfect conditions, you're really splitting hairs.
