"This isn’t stats vs scouts - this is stats and scouts working together, building an organization that blends the best of both worlds. It is a matter of perception. Northwestern was supposed to have a good team this season. Georgia was supposed to have a BCS Title caliber team.
@JoJo, you are the one who brought up OSU's performance against NW. It is what it is, they had high expectations, were playing good at the time, but have fallen on tough time. All I was saying is that Georgia has gotten a pass this season for failing to live up to expectations because they were hurt. NW dealing with similar issues has been hammered. Perception.
I'll grant you this -- since most people are harping on OSU's schedule, I can see why you'd think that, if they're rating FSU ahead of OSU, they must think FSU's schedule is tougher. But that's not really why voters prefer FSU, so you have grounds for griping about the inconsistency.
Well, we're talking about comparing teams that have won all their games up to this point. So if we're trying to separate them, yes, people are going to have to look closer.
Georgia was #3 going into the Clemson game, and went on to beat South Carolina and LSU later that month. Then the injuries hit. Since then, they haven't been nearly as good. But people watching in September saw what they saw.
As for Clemson, they're undefeated other than the FSU game, were ranked #3 going into that game, and they're still ranked #7 in the BCS. If destroying them at their place doesn't count for much, nobody's victory over anybody counts for much. Which brings up the primary driver behind all of this, both in the polls and computers -- nothing impresses the entire ecosystem like going into a highly-ranked someone else's house and crushing them. Many voters seem to think it's the most impressive performance by any team in any game this year, so yes, that's going to carry a lot of weight when comparing teams.

Ohio State is going to wear all white unis against Michigan.

I've been mixed on some of the alternates, but I really like these.
HEY! Don Criqui and Beasley Reece resemble that remark!
The main problem I have with any computer model trying to break down strength of schedule for these undefeated teams is that it is inevitably picking nits on minutia.
I mean, if a team is truly top of College Football, then whether the opponent is rated #70 or #110 in the BCS standings really shouldn't matter even a little bit.
Sure you can argue that a team #70 has a better chance of pulling off the upset but that chance is still so negligible as to be meaningless.
A friend of mine who is familiar with a lot of the issues points out that while computers are really pretty good at separating out the #64 & #65 best teams, they aren't particularly good at separating the 1 vs 2 vs 3 undefeated resumes.
That said, at least the logic used by the computers is consistent from week to week within a season.

Hugs, smiling, and interactive Twitter accounts, don't mean winning baseball. Until this community understands that we are cursed to relive the madness.
Good point, sometimes people want to RPI the football schedules, but it's a different animal than basketball. There are really three kinds of opponents:
1. Teams that can beat you even if you play decently
2. Teams that can beat you, but only if you give the game away
3. Teams that won't beat you as long as you show up
For a team that's genuinely one of the top few in the land, category one is pretty small (and the better the team, the smaller that list will be). So there's not much purpose in arguing whether, say, Michigan or Miami is a tougher opponent (and in the full BCS rankings they are slotted 31-32). A true championship-worthy team has no business losing to either. It could still happen on One Of Those Days, it's college football after all, but so far the top four have beaten who they're supposed to beat.

The BCS should have a "game experience" rating as another level of differentiation.
I think "oh, oh, oh, oh" is superior to the tomahawk chop, for example. "Hang on Sloopy" and 100 renditions of "Fight the Team" per game is pretty strong also. And we have the self-proclaimed TBDBITL and the tunnel entry. The Seminoles do have the awesome flaming spear ritual to start home games, so they get points for that.
"Rounding 3rd and heading for home, good night everybody"

And you think they have a hard time figuring out who looks better on a football field? Why not a data point for the best looking cheerleaders? Smartest students? Largest...endowments?
Watch for Roy in the south stands Block O this Saturday. Going with daughter Lizzy.
Maybe I'll body surf down the crowd.

OSU fan called in to Colin Cowherd today with the following stat:
OSU's road opponents this year are a combined 0-18 against Big Ten teams.
Northwestern, Illinois, and Purdue.
I am not pointing that out to prove a point...I was just amazed by that stat. Wow.
