We have to talk about Corky

He hit .203/.288/.344 at Louisville as a 37 year old. He has a .563 OPS spanning parts of eleven Major League seasons. Defensively, he's beyond abysmal. I am okayish with whatever intangible mojo he has granting him a slot as the AAA back up. But why/how is he on a MLB roster, particularly a team looking to bring home a World Series? When does this stop? This is the single most maddening thing about the 2013 Reds, Hanigan has been hurt/bad all year, and there hasn't been anyone brought into Louisville. Now, I am not saying the person they'd get would be any good. But I refuse to believe that there isn't anyone out there who could be had for nothing who could beat out Corky Miller. Why settle for historically terrible when there is an opportunity for bad?

The worst part is the Reds have a catcher in AAA with an .801 OPS this season and a .743 career minor league OPS.

I kind of assumed Ashley must only have one leg or something for him not to be up. Has anyone seen him play?

    Corky's mustache trumps all.

It is such a physical position, it pained me to see him trying to do the job. It's like watching a coach or manager play. I can't imagine the rationale for not having someone younger and more capable.

It's the intimidation factor of the mustache that keeps him with Cincy.

He's not a MLB player except as a receiver. He's bad, Craig Tatum bad

When a 28-year-old catcher with a .743 career minor-league OPS has never gotten the call to the big leagues, the first thing that sprung to my mind was, "he must not look major-league caliber behind the plate even if you squint real hard."

But yes, I agree with the general idea -- if Hanigan's an ongoing injury concern and Corky is what they think the best AAA option is, we need a better AAA option.

Re: We have to talk about Corky

I agree that Corky is not the best option to bring up, but what frustrates me is the options out there in FA.

For those who argue that Corky knows the pitchers, what about Ramon Hernandez? He was with this team from '09-'11 so he caught during the same time frame as Bailey, Arroyo, Cueto, and Leake amongst our SP and he caught Chapman as well.

From what I recall watching him play for us was that he had a decent bat but was slow. However, Corky looks like he has no power and is still slow. Even though Ramon fizzled out in Colorado and LA and in the Toronto minors, his average is better than Corky's and he has power.

Let Ramon grow a mustache, then an informed decision can be made

And this isn't a new topic. We had this same discussion last season.

I get that Corky's 'stache is cool and he'll make a good manager or coach some day, but he really shouldn't be on this team.

Agreed. That is what I am afraid of this season. That they are bring him up for one last hurrah before he retires. I would just hate the reasoning to be that since we are in a possible WS run.

Each at bat he takes weakens the club.

He sucks, say it, embrace it... it's a sport not a fashion show, I can swing a dead cat and hit 4 guys in Portland with a great mustache, that and 10 bucks will get you into Heavy Metal Karaoke on Tuesday night and nothing to do with why he should be on the team.

I was okay when he was brought up earlier in the year...until I saw him play. After that, there's no reason he should haev been brought back. Once a philosopher, twice a pervert.
