    Proposed Trade

I admit that I am biased because I do not like the Joey Votto contract extension. However, Ryan Braun will clearly be better off with a change of address, the Reds need a right handed bat, and the minor leagues are not producing a lot of tradable talent.

I propose after the 2013 season the Reds trade Votto to the Brewers for Braun. Milwaukee rids themselves of Braun and upgrade their lineup. The Reds fill a needed position and save at least $75 million by trading Votto's contract. First base is an easy position to get decent production out of and I do not see Votto as giving the Reds $20 million dollar production in last several years of his contract (if ever).

What is "$20 million dollar production" to you? That seems to be the first question I would ask.

Also, if 1B is an easy place to get production, I'm not sure why I watched the Reds roll out subpar 1B for my whole life until Votto took over (with due respect to a couple of good Sean Casey performances in there).

Sure, trade one of the most admired players in recent memory for a villain. Makes sense.

I do not admire baseball players. I admire winning championships. Braun could be putting up better numbers than Votto over the next 5 years. Votto could easily destroy the teams chances when he is in his late 30's and taking up such a large portion of the budget. This would not just be a baseball decision but a money decision. Let's remember how Larkin's contract and Griffey's contract effected the Reds late in their careers.

This is because Joey Votto gets less RBIs, isn't it?
"On-base percentage is great if you can score runs and do something with that on-base percentage," Baker said. "Clogging up the bases isn't that great to me."

Negative, Ghost Rider. The pattern is full.

My thought is that Braun is going to have to give up steroids and his numbers are likely to go way down.

The Reds rolled out a lot of sub-par players for a lot of years because of expensive contracts for older players. For $20 million a year I want to see 40 hr, 120 rbi, 300 avg, and solid defense in a critical position. What $20 million dollar contract is actually providing good return to the team...Not Hamilton, Pujols, or A-Rod.

Um, I'm not trading Votto, but I'm not opposed to obtaining Ryan Braun.

Those are very rare stats. I think you need to come to terms with the difference between what you want to see and what the Reds have to offer right now. Votto is probably a top-5 hitter in the history of the franchise and he's probably #2 overall in MLB right now -- maybe #1. We are fortunate to be able to see him remain a Red for the duration.

I think the Votto contract will be a terrible drag on the Reds franchise in 5-6 years but no way you trade him for Braun.
