    The ones who got away!

With the deadline approaching, thought it would be fun to talk about those we traded away or lost via free agency over the years that did not turn out so well. The big one of course was the Frank Robinson/Milt Pappas deal. I'll toss losing Claude Osteen and Hal McCrae in to the mix.

John Franco for Randy Myers & Kip Gross. Myers was here for only 2 seasons. And Gross was, well, gross.

Trading Christy Mathewson for Amos Rusie didn't turn out very well. Rusie won zero games for the Reds while Matty had 372 wins for the Giants.

Giving away Hank Sauer in the 40s and Curt Flood in the 50s didn't work out very well.
Giving away Ross Grimsley after the 1973 season and giving away Mike Caldwell in 1977 cost the Reds a couple of division titles.
Trading Tony Perez for Woody Fryman didn't work.

Tony Gonzalez (not the NFL player) 1960. Had a very good career with the Phillies.

The Reds made a great move in December of 1934 by acquiring Johnny Mize from the Cardinals, only to return him to St. Louis four months later

kind of shocked this wasn't one of the first replies. I can defend a lot of Reds misfires, but even though I understood the thinking (we needed pitching, Hamilton was potentially a walking time bomb), this was a bad one.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”
