    George herman ruth

The Cincinnati Reds and New York Giants expressed interest in Ruth, but Dunn sold his contract, along with those of pitchers Ernie Shore and Ben Egan, to the Boston Red Sox on July 4. The sale price was announced as $25,000 but various later stories lower the amount to half that, or possibly $8,500 plus the cancellation of a $3,000 loan. Ruth remained with the Orioles for several days while the Red Sox completed a road trip, and reported to the team in Boston on July 11.

The 6 that stick out in my mind from the last 20 years consist of 3 closers and 3 sluggers:

    Trevor Hoffman
    John Wetteland
    BJ Ryan
    Paul O'Neill
    Paul Konerko
    Josh Hamilton

That Hoffman guy had a nice career even if it was not as a shortstop.

Losing Caldwell did hurt but the belief was he was leaving either way because he was going the free agent route.

    Nope.

Caldwell was traded to the Brewers for two minor leaguers who never made it to the big show.

Also, right around that same time, Howsam, under the belief that Jack Billingham was through, dealt him to Detroit for virtually nothing -- only to see Billingham enjoy two bounceback years in Detroit.

Dealing Champ Summers to Detroit in '79 didn't work out, either.

Here's one the Reds almost picked up Robin Roberts after the Phillys cut him loose in 61'. Fred Hutchinson was ready to sign him, but Bill DeWitt screwed it up when Roberts would not take a $15,000.00 deal instead of the $30,000.00 he was asking. I know that this was near the end of his career, but he still managed 3 winning years for Baltimore with a avg ERA of 3.01

Here's the Foster trade. Nice haul.

Traded by Cincinnati Reds to New York Mets in exchange for Alex Trevino, Jim Kern
and Greg Harris (February 10, 1982).
