    Speaking of Clifton...

Just read that Lenhardts won't be reopening. For those that don't know, that place had the best German/Hungarian cuisine in town, without a doubt. The owner would buy meat from the butcher and hand carve it himself. The Saurbraten and Spaetzle... the Kaisler Ripchen... out of this world.

Now it's gone. The old building will be "bulldozed for student housing."

Clifton has lost a lot of its history lately to development. Uncle Woodys, Inn the Wood, Acropolis Chili, Papa Dinos, all gone.

Progress is good, of course. But the "neighborhood charm" I remember noticing when I first stepped foot into Clifton many years ago seems to be long gone.

Perspective is important too I guess. I remember being mad when they closed down Ripleys and opened up a Chipotle there. And Corry's closing with Mad Frog taking its place.

I guess it's better. Calhoun Street used to be a strip of bars, restaurants, and drive thru fast food. Now it is a strip mall with student housing above. Just seems so bland though. Maybe that is the idea.

Kind of sad. My office had a retirement party for our registrar the night that church caught fire. My GF and I ate there a few times after that and we really liked it. I knew they closed and the building was in danger of being torn down but I didn't know it is gone.

I remember when they tried to rehab Tangemins in campus then eventually tore it down.

Tangimins was a game room on campus, right in the middle of it actually. Sort of next to Nippert.

It was a pool hall, bowling alley, and arcade room. And (gasp) they sold beer. At certain times of the day it was kind of shady. Lots of wasted time there.

People talk of a "more innocent time," but I think that is a half truth. Yes there are more crazies out there these days, but I also think our society has adjusted by "nerfing" everything.

I'm sure that's what the previous generation said about mine though, so who knows...

It has just been replaced with the Catskeller. Same location, several pool tables and arcade games. And yes, they have a good beer selection at a bar right in the middle of campus.

That's good to know. For a while there it was replaced with just a food court. Always felt that was a huge step down... cool they brought the idea back.

As someone who spent many a summer evening at Christy's biergarten I find this to be really sad.

There's a real sense of loss that comes with this.

The Catskeller is really great now after a pretty mediocre reboot when they rehabbed Tangeman (almost 10 years ago, my goodness!). It's now run by a craft beer enthusiast who greatly expanded the selection but kept prices friendly to the college-student wallet.

I'm the first to admit I'm a sentimental kind of guy. This whole thing just depresses me though.

That's probably a me issue more than anything else.
This is the time. The real Reds organization is back.

The same thing happened on the OSU campus up and down High St. All the dives became Paneras, Starbucks, Barnes And Noble, and student housing of the level of a place that I couldn't afford till I was 30 back in the day.

    Re: Speaking of Clifton...

Clifton Heights looked like Sarajevo last time I was there; St. George was burnt up, buildings were torn down, Woodies/Gorgitons were boarded up, Acropolis gone, everything I cherished from my days living on Lyon St. in college was just gone. My understanding is that UC is involved with trying to refurbish the area, but I wonder wheter their indifference to Coryville and Clifton Heights for so many years may have been a strategy to just wall off the campus and wait for decline to make the property available.
