I feel like posting about Marlon Byrd's stats on a Reds board has a little to do with the Reds, but okay. Sorry.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

But you responded to a post about Marlon Byrd in a a thread that was discussing Marlon Byrd. This thread (and Marlon Byrd) has a lot to do with the Reds, considering they passed on him and let a team they are chasing have him for peanuts.

And so I was just trying to figure out what Ryan Ludwick had to do with Marlon Byrd.

What would you do with both Ludwick and Byrd on the same team? They are basically the same player.

Marlon Byrd would have had 7 ABs last night instead of Chris Heisey.

    Anything else?

The Reds wouldn't have traded for Byrd. All that would have been done is Byrd would have been playing for the Mets yesterday instead of the Pirates. Maybe the guy starting in place of Byrd for the Pirates would have made the difference between a Pirates loss and Pirates win.

Marlon Byrd and Ryan Ludwick can both occupy the same roster.

Also, Marlon Byrd on the Reds means he’s not on the Pirates.

Marlon Byrd can play LF when Ludwick does not (see last night for example) and provide insurance in case Ludwick re-aggravates his 35-year old damaged shoulder.

Also, Marlon Byrd on the Reds means he’s not on the Pirates.

For those games Ludwick plays, Byrd can also provide a RH bat off the bench that is sorely needed on this roster (see last night for example).

Also, Marlon Byrd on the Reds means he’s not on the Pirates.

The Reds play six more games with the Pirates. That’s six times that they will face Marlon Byrd when they could have used Marlon Byrd against the Pirates. That’s significant when you consider that winning 4 of 6 could be the difference in winning the division and playing a one game play-in.

•The Reds released Justin Freeman, according to Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com (on Twitter). Freeman gave up two runs in a one-inning appearance for the Reds this year, but has a 3.57 ERA in 307 1/3 career minor league innings.

    James McDonald Elects Free Agency

By Zach Links [September 14 at 4:00pm CST]

SEPT 14: McDonald has refused his outright assignment and elected free agency, according to the Pirates' transactions page.

McDonald, 28, was just reinstated from the disabled list after being out of action since April 30th due to issues with his throwing shoulder. The right-hander wasn't terribly sharp in six starts this season, posting a 5.76 ERA with 7.6 K/9 and 6.1 BB/9. McDonald was once considered to be a high-upside prospect when he started out with L.A. and was rated No. 56 nationally by Baseball America before the '09 season. For his career, McDonald owns a 4.20 ERA with 7.8 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9.

Tulo and CarGo in play this offseason?
    http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/ba...icle-1.1462087

The Rockies aren’t desperate to get rid of the contract, but baseball people familiar with their thinking say Colorado believes getting a package for Tulowitzki while reinvesting some of the money it would save could speed up a necessary rebuilding process.
OK, so how about this: Travis d’Arnaud, Dillon Gee, and Rafael Montero for Tulowitzki.
As I wrote on Sunday, the Rockies’ people don't see the Mets as a great match in a deal for either Tulowitzki or Carlos Gonzalez, for whom they’ll also listen to offers.
Their thought is that position players would provide a more predictable return, given the Rockies’ problems developing pitching at altitude — which they see as important if they’re trading a star, particularly Tulowitzki. And the Mets have little to offer in that area.

I know Tulo is the guy who makes everybody's eyes light up considering he plays SS, but man, CarGo would absolutely rake at GABP (and isn't owed money for an eternity like Tulo). Think Choo w/more power. Of course, he's never played in more than 145 games in a season, and the Rox would want a good haul, so we probably aren't a fit for either guy. But if we could move BP's contract...

Yep, Reds certainly had nothing to lose by blocking Byrd to the Pirates.

While it is obvious that his bat would have helped the Reds (Ludwick is not ML ready and won't be this season), I can accept the notion that mgmt did not want to ruin team chemistry.

But any claim that Walt and mgmt did not make a serious error by not blocking the trade to the Pirates needs to be retracted...
