Re: Official waiver trade deadline thread (August 31)

The Rays have designated right-hander Kyle Farnsworth for assignment, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times (on Twitter). Josh Lueke will be recalled from Triple-A Durham to take his place on the roster.

Farnsworth, 37, served as the Rays' closer back in the 2011 season and posted a masterful 2.18 ERA with 25 saves, but it's been downhill since then. He posted a 4.00 ERA last season and has pitched to a 5.76 ERA with 5.8 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9 in 29 2/3 innings this season. His fastball is averaging a career-worst 92.5 mph. Farnsworth signed a one-year, $1.25MM contract with the Rays back in February.

Re: Official waiver trade deadline thread (August 31)

I'd do the deal, IF I thought that we could get him for a middle-of-the-pack prospect and the White Sox throw in a bunch of cash AND I thought that Walt could unload him in the off-season for a similar prospect coming to us. And, I'd do it tonight, while the Reds still have an outside chance to win the division. I have no faith in Ludwig doing anything this year and very little faith in him doing anything next year. In which case, the Reds still have the same problem next year as they have had this year.

Let's hope not. The only thing I see on .699 Delmon's resume that attracts me is his brother's hitting ability.

I'd take a flier on Professor Farnsworth, at the very least he'd be a good guy to have off the bench.

I will be even more annoyed than I already am if the Reds pickup Dunn (and his contract) after passing on Rios. Both are signed through next year, but while Dunn makes more money, Rios is younger, right-handed, plays much better defense (including CF) and has a slightly better OPS over the last 2 seasons (they both had dismal 2011s).

In fact, for two completely different players, it is actually a bit eerie how similar some of their storylines are: (remainder of contract, OBP and SLG the last two years, dismal 2011 seasons, both disappointing White Sox OF that have been criticized for lack of effort and may get traded this week).

That said, I guess I'd rather have Dunn than nothing.

The Reds aren't picking up Adam Dunn.

Dunn is not an upgrade. He is maybe the worst fielder in baseball, and he has a .337 OBP out of LF. Considering his contract, I can't think of much of a worse fit for the Reds.

If I was an AL team and had a hole at DH and the Sox were prepared to pay 10M of next year's salary, I might have some mild interest in him. But the Reds? Zero interest from my end.

Adam Rosales has been DFA'd for what seems like the 10th time this season. All joking aside.. It has been 3 times since July 31st.

Why did the A's do that again? Didn't they actually give Texas something to get him back?

I believe the A's are trying to get him through waivers so they can send him down to triple-a.

watching the Brewers tonight, makes you wonder if the Reds should have claimed Juan Fransisco after the Braves released him. has 15 homeruns and 40 RBIs.. hmmm could have been a better option over Hanahan (zero homers)
