Reds Superfan Chuck Dee Trouble at GABP?

It was some sort of mess. Not a hot one though. When I think of a hot mess, a certain female friend of mine comes to mind and we weren't arguing about her.

I'm sure there's some grandma out there who hasn't missed a Reds game in 70 years who has you beat.

That would be my grandma who hasn't missed a game since June 3, 1945 when her dad took her to her very first ballgame (a doubleheader) at Crosley Field where as a 13 year old girl, in the 7th inning of the first game, she caught a pinch hit homerun off the bat of Brooklyn Dodger Frenchy Bordagaray. After the second game, my great-grandfather took her down to the field and they had the ball signed by the entire Dodger team. Today that ball sits in a case on my dresser.

To me, she'll always be the #1 Reds fan.

I'm sorry I threw the thread off by bringing up soccer. I don't think having fans cheer and sing for 9 innings would be doable in baseball, but there are things that can be learned. For example, I like the idea of creating a section in the stadium where the cans who want to cheer and clap and sing can sit with like minded people. Call it "Rooters Row" or have them sit out in the Sun Deck. They can go all out and be crazy goofy fans if they want without causing a nuisance for those who want to be left alone to watch the game. Make it a section for Reds fans only to avoid problems with opposing fans. Let them hang signs and banners as long as they aren't obscene or inflammatory. Allow them creativity within certain guidelines with the caveat that if they violate those guidelines, they risk losing privileges or face ejection and usually the fans in those sections will police their own to avoid trouble.

Soccer isn't inherently violent or racist. Soccer is played all over the globe, in many countries where violence and racism is a problem in the country as a whole. The violence that occurs at soccer games often has political overtones. For example, derby games between AS Roma (traditionally the team supported by Socialists) and Lazio (the Nationalist team) have had their share of problems because you have persons from opposite ends of the political spectrum encountering each other in a confined space. Soccer violence in Egypt last year had little to do with actual soccer and more to do with political turmoil in the country as a whole.

Personally, when it comes to US sports, I can't stand going to NFL games, even though I enjoy watching iton TV. Fights, rude and offensive behavior, and general obnoxiousness are par for the course in places like Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Philly. Philly has its own jail.

When I think soccer fan, I don't think of the Portland 20,000. I think of the worlds 3 billion. Racists. Insane stampedes. Throwing things on the field at players/officials.

I don't have a dog in the fight, don't really care either way. I played soccer for many years and had fun, lived with some soccer players in college so went to their games, just don't enjoy watching it but certainly don't hate the sport.
I work in a trendy, arty kind of town; when I think of soccer I think of the hipster, wannabe type that come out the wood work when the World Cup is on, just so they can sport some random country they have no association with jersey and crowd the bar with others.

Same here. We used to like to watch from out there -- and talk to Joe the usher -- before it was overtaken by pajama- and cape-wearing superfans.

I grew up near Joe and went to HS with his brother Mike. I've never met someone more knowledgable about baseball history. He's a great guy.

In fact, he's a perfect example of how you can be an extremely passionate sports fan without wearing a cape or yelling yourself hoarse during a game. I've actually left football games and had no voice the next day, but different strokes for different folks. As someone pointed out earlier, the pacing and flow of a baseball game is unique to all other team sports, which makes constant noise often difficult/awkward.

Dressing up, yelling loudly, jumping around, and miming playing the drums certainly displays enthusiasm for your favorite team, but it doesn't make you a better fan. Most people don't have the time or resources to attend 81 home games. I'm sure there are thousands of fans who follow the minutia of the current rostrr more closely than Chuck Dorn, or know more Reds history, or know more about the Reds farm system.

You know what being a "super fan" is? It's when you have to work all the time during Reds games and your only option is to listen on a radio with reception so bad that it emits constant static and a high pitched squeal so bad it makes coworkers leave the room. I have several years of thst under my belt.
