    Jay Bruce appreciation thread...

I understand how fans can be frustrated by Bruce at times as can I, but wow the guy can single handedly determine the outcome of a game with his talents (i.e. today). He showed he is a 4+ tool player and may be the most important everyday player outside of Votto from here on out. Great guy to boot.

Maybe this thread is unnecessary and superfluous I dunno....

Hey, it's not another thread about Dusty's performance as manager, so it's definitely not unnecessary.

He is defintiely one of the streakiest player I've ever seen (if not the most streakiest), but I agree with your assessment.

    Also, I like his hair.

The only other hitter I've watched with such smooth, easy power was Ken Griffey Jr.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

My goal for him this season is a 850+ ops which I think is very doable.

Most improved player on the team, IMO. Still room to grow toward a high ceiling.

Is that the highly economical one you can purchase full of soda at the games?

I was saying last year how Jay never established a "baseline" production, which is what one usually gets when applying proper technique. That meant he was getting into those slumps. This year it looks like he's established a baseline, so he's not falling off cliffs like he was.
Sabermetrics is this: A batter's goal is to extend the inning. Extend enough innings and you're going to score runs. Extend more innings than your opponent and you're going to score more runs than him.

Forget the rain. It's never an official game until the Reds piss away a run between third base and home plate. - Bluegrass Redleg

Great hitter. He's figured it out this year.

And it seems like the defense is back after taking a year or so off.

And under the team's control at club-friendly wages for three more years.

He's been good. He'll be in the final talks for a gold glove....we'll see if he can get it.

He has himself in great shape AND is a touch quicker this year which helped him make 2 catches in this series he may not have just last year and he beat out the DP today for the RBI...which ended up being huge.

    He's a good guy.

His "on-pace-for" 3.2 WAR seems low to me.

Not a huge WAR fan, but that surprises me.

    Re: Jay Bruce appreciation thread...

I'm a huge Jay Bruce fan, he is my current favorite player on the Reds. I still believe there is a little more in there somewhere, and I guess I always will, until it either shows up, or he retires.

On the WAR front, I think he gets shorted on the base running, and defensive scales. I'm not saying he is a great base stealer(he's not) but he is good at getting the base he should on his own hits, as well as advancing on others, whether that means first to third or even home.

As for defense, he has struggles like some other players, but I have never believed him to be below average at any point like gets rated.

I am also a big fan of what he does for the community, such as helping with special needs children, and continuing Aaron Harang's Aaron's Aces program. Plus naming the baseball field he helped pay for after the scout who signed him, but past away a year later, shows great character I think.

As for a teammate you always hear guys say that he tells them when they first come to the Reds, if they have questions or need help just ask, or let him know show how unselfish I think he is.

That said he's not perfect, he will have bad games, but I will always pull for him like I do any other player.

A .325 OBP is nothing to write home about and defensively he's grading out about average. His walk rate is at a career low. A 3.2 WAR season is a solid, above average type of year. For Bruce to take the next step though, he's going to need to get himself to first base more often.

LOL at the Saber crowd taking over another thread that compliments a Reds player who isn't named Votto.
